Computer tries to read corrupt photos and crashes... please help

Hey, I've got a couple thousand digital photos from the past couple years from europe, college, etc. The problem is that they seem to corrupt, or something, because in some of the folders as Windows XP loads the thumbnails or icons it will freeze for a second then report some fatal memory error and reload windows. I'd like to be able to tell windows not to crash itself just 'cause it has trouble reading the file. Any suggestions? thanks in advance,

Tristan

Does it matter which program u use to open the pictures with? Try opening it with different programs, use a 3rd party application and see if it still happens.

For the rebooting...

Windows XP lets you specify how the OS handles critical errors. To change this setting, select Start > Control Panel > Settings > System (in the Classic-style Start menu, Control Panel is under Settings). Click Advanced > System And Recovery > Settings. In the System Failure section, clear the Automatically Restart check box, then click OK. While you're here, it's a good idea to shut off XP's irritating habit of asking whether you want to report every petty error to Microsoft. Click the Error Reporting button near the bottom right and check Disable Error Reporting. However, check the box next to "But notify me when critical errors occur." Click OK here and in the next dialog.

Thanks for the replies -

No it does not matter what program i use to open the files. For example, if i try to open the file in photoshop, as soon as windows seems to load the information about it and make the icon viewable in the photoshop browser window the computer reloads windows.

Thanks for the idea about rebooting - I checked what you said however the box was already unchecked. The funny thing is that it's not so much as a reboot (AIM, Outlook, etc never close) but windows goes to just the background and seems to reload everything after stating it's crashing due to some memory thing.

Any ideas? Thanks

thank you!!!! i'll give it a try

Edit: hmmm, photo rescue looks good but does anyone know of a free program that does the same thing? Thanks again

PhotoRescue found 4 corrupt *.bmp's but all the corrupt files, and there have to be at least 10, are jpg..... weird
