Computer Transporting Question

I live in Houston and go to school in St. Louis, and I want to transport my computer (not monitor) about 2-3 times per year back and forth (and I don't want to get a laptop). I have a few possible methods and want to know what you guys think is the best way.

1. Check-in the computer on the flight
2. Take the computer as carry-on luggage on flight (can I do this?)
3. FedEx it home

Rank of which I prefer: 2>3>1. I don't have a box for my computer (however if I do 1 or 3, I will have to get one somehow), so if I carry the computer on the plane, it will be inside a (rigid) bag probably along with my clothes and stuff.
