Computer to Router VS Computer to Computer

Good morning all,

When I connect my two computers to each other directly using a crossover cable and both comps have built in Gigabit Ethernet cards, I get blazing speeds in transferring very large work files. I recently got a router that has 4 gigabit ports. I connected the two computers to the router and transfer speeds are dismal.

I also have my Wii plugged in the router which is not Gigabit. It's not on but it does show up as active in the routers log page. Could this affect speeds? I mean does every thing have to be Gigabit capable to get faster transfer speeds?

Also my Gigabit Ethernet cards have the jumbo frame rate options whereas my router does not. It seems the Dlink 655 cannot handle jumbo frames higher than 1500 or 4000. Does that make any difference?

fyi, you don't need a crossover with GigE as auto MDIX is built into the standard. sending jumbo frames to a switch that cannot handle such a frame size will cause a multitude of issues.

if you have some requirement for jumbo frames, the HP ProCurve 1800 is a worthy switch which can support such functionality. otherwise, leave it off...

When using Jumbo frames with Client OS' on a peer-to-peer Network the difference between with, or without Jumbo Frames is very small.

As far as my experience goes some Entry Level Switches Do not work well and "stifle" the Giga traffic ( Notoroiusly the ones native to the Wireless Routers ).

I mange to "Squeeze" Transfer of 50MB/sec. to 58MB/sec. by using this Switch. ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16833156251 ).

Using Windows regular protocols (No SMB).

Optimizing the TCP/IP of each computer according to the Internet connection and setting the RCwin to double what the recommended RCwin is.
