Computer to Computer Sharing?

Ok so my friend just got this sweet new laptop with Intel integrated wireless B/G. Im cruising along with my Sony with my Cisco wireless card OR DLink External wireless USB. I want to be able to connect to his laptop and talk to him and send files during class. I tried the basic AD HOC connection but I couldn't seem to see any of his shared files, nor his computer on the network. He couldn't see mine either.

How do I go about setting up ad hoc? How about an instant messaging program through the network?
