I would like to know tips from expert computer technicians on how to make the job of repairing a computer easier.

Especially when it comes to reinstalling the OS and all useful programs and drivers.

Google is your friend. Rarely will you encounter anything that lots of folks before have not already encountered and solved.

On a serious note, do you have a certain way you deal with machines that have largely different hardware configurations?

This. And tell your users the same. I've got two computers in my office right now with hosed drives, and the users are pissed because their data is gone. Of course they are all made well aware their data is their responsibility, but they still never backup.

find . -name "*.log" -mtime -7 -exec grep "index.html" {} \; | awk '{print $4}nt $1":"$2}' | sort | uniq -c | awk '{printf("\n %s\t%d:\t", $2,$1); for (i=0; i < $1; i++) printf("*")}

sysprep and your unattend.txt or xml. we only have different images for different hal types. and with vista/2008 that's less of a problem.

It prints out the number of times a site was hit based on the modified time of said site per hour ignoring any hours that had no hits. Furthermore it uses the asterix to make a text/pictoral bar graph based on the number of hits.

Have someone else do it. That's the easiest way.

And make sure you have more than one copy.

Here are my tips:

Ctrl + S is your friend.

Learn how ipconfig works, it will solve 70% of the networking problems you will encounter.

If you can't figure out what the problem is, it's probably you.

Google before you ask.

Never trust zip files; scan everything you download BEFORE you open it.

Firefox + noscript is like a condom for the internet, always put it on before you go into strange places.

You are not a winner; you are not going to receive a free Xbox 360.

Before clicking on a link you are not sure of (black avatar posted link), always hover your mouse over the link and read in the lower left of you browser what the address is. If you just have to know what it is but don?t trust the link, put on your condom before you click.

Don?t nef at work.

That thread is from 2006.... is it still recommended? Is it updated?

ATOT would be a near dead forum if that were the case.

Read the manual.
Resolution, not screen size.
Disable all auto over clocking / energy saving.
A fridge can not cool a PC.
More that 3 gigs = 64 bit O/S.
PCIe 2.0 is backwards compatible.
Set Vdimm to manufacturer's spec.
Uninstall nTune.
RMA and reformat are useless, desperate acts.
Ultramon.
