Computer suddenly stopped POSTing - bad MOBO?

My pride and joy has suddenly stopped working. It powers up just fine and the mouse and the keyboard light up (caps/num/scroll lock lights) but the monitor receives no signal. Of note--the mouse optical sensor does not come on and I cannot toggle the keyboard caps/num/scroll lock lights on and off; the keyboard lights are just on.

This computer has had some issues over the past month where it would boot up properly and I could see that Windows 8 had loaded up on my monitor, but the keyboard and mouse were unresponsive, which I solved by rebooting.

It doesn't seem to be the power supply since the unit seems to have power. It worked perfectly fine last night and I shut it down as usual. Could a capacitor on the motherboard involved with data input/output have given out?

What would explain these symptoms? Would unplugging the computer from the wall and removing/replacing the motherboard's battery do anything?

Motherboard = Asus P8Z68-V LX

Do you have a speaker connected to the mobo? Does it give you any beep codes?

If you remove the GPU and RAM, does it give beep codes? If it doesn't, it could be the PSU or mobo. Try a different PSU. If still no beep codes, it's likely the CPU or mobo.

Was it overclocked at all? Tried resetting CMOS?

There appears to be lots of owner complaints about your particular MB. Many of these complaints seem to describe the kind of problem you are reporting.

It appears that if you get a good one, then it runs fine and lasts. But if it's a problematic board. then the best solution is to replace it.

Advice is to tear it all down, clean then reassemble. If no change then ditch the MB for something with a better user report/review record.

The Antec 300 case does not come with a built-in speaker, apparently, so as of now there's no motherboard speaker. As far as the age of the board goes, I've been using it for about 1 2/3 years and it's come under heavy use as my main gaming rig.

What do you guys make of previous problems with the mouse/keyboard at start-up? I'm hoping that that piece of data will really shed light on the culprit--it's like a component degenerated over time. The computer would boot up just fine and come into Windows--it would go to my Windows desktop and obviously the monitor displayed an image, but the mouse and keyboard would not function until after a fresh reboot. The problem seems to be related to the boot-up because it would function perfectly without any problems for hours.

What make/model power supply do you have installed? If you have a multimeter, there are tons of videos on Youtube which show how to check an ATX power supply to make sure it is outputting the proper voltage. It is always worth doing this because you don't want to end up blowing up a new board by installing it on a bad power supply.

FWIW, if the motherboard is less than 2 years old, it should still be under warranty (ASUS motherboards generally carry a 3 year warranty for regular boards, of which the P8Z68-V LX is) so you may be able to RMA with ASUS if the board is in fact dead.

The PSU is a 550W modular Antec Basiq. Do you think it's possible that the rig is drawing too much juice? It's a Core I5 3750k overclocked to 4.2 Ghz. I'm really not running much more on it other than a couple 120mm fans and SSDs. I did not purchase the mobo directly; I bought the entire rig assembled and ready to go, but I do have the original mobo box and it does say it has a 3 year warranty. If I can narrow it down to the mobo, a return might be an option.

The major components are:

Motherboard = Asus P8Z68-V LX

PSU = 550w modular Antec

CPU = Intel core i5 3570k overclocked to 4.2 Ghz and water cooled (system has been rock solid with almost zero crashes)

GPU = nVidia GeForce GTX 560

RAM = Generic DDR3 1333, 8 GB, 2x2x2x2

Update -- I removed three of the four 2 GB RAM sticks and it BOOTS up and goes into Windows! This is a simple problem that I can solve! I'm so happy.

After popping the sticks back in one by one, it still works with all four sticks of brand-X "Nanya" RAM. Go figure. The RAM is obviously the issue. I had pressed the RAM settings reset button on the motherboard and it rebooted and supposedly ran a test to find good settings, so perhaps that's the issue. I guess I'll revisit the RAM settings this weekend when I have some more time.

The RAM is: Nanya NT2GC64B88B0NF-CG
