In Toronto I had FactoryDirect and a bevy of cheap computer stores around, but I have no idea what's in Montreal.

I just replied to another Quebec thread a minute ago. You guys invading, or just rescuing Celine Dion?

You, or whoever has her, can keep her.

Was your reply pertinent to my question? I want my cheap goods!

Seriously, are there no chains like Best Buy/FutureShop and the like around there? Or are they above your target price range?

We've got the chains, but they're above my price point. The cheapest wireless card I could find at the usual suspects is $45, when I got my last one in Toronto for $15. This is echoed in everything they stock.

I don't know what it's like where you live, but in Toronto the best deals were in sketchy little computer stores which never advertised. Or FactoryDirect, which has a grab-bag of random electronics/computer supplies.

I used to live in Canada, but I wasn't into computers then. Nowadays most of what I buy I do online, new or used. I only go to a store when I need something pronto, and it's a chain because I check in advance that they have it. I really don't know what the mom & pop shops in Chicago are like. Maybe you could find your sought items on Craigslist?

$45 for a wireless NIC is insane! Does that include GST?

GST and then QST are not included... which makes it around $52 total.

I buy online from NCIX.com all the time, as they have great service, they price match, and their location in BC saves me 8% tax. I just wanted a wireless card so I could ditch my 6 year old laptop and use my new C2D system off of the neighbours' wifi until we get internet.

Honestly, the cheapest way is illegal imports. Buy in the US, ship to a friend's / relative's house in the US... smuggle across border.
