My sister (in another state) called me with a problem I can't figure out. Her computer doesn't see drive D (cd-rom) in "my computer." In device manager, there is an exclamation point next to both primary and secondary ide controllers. She tried to update driver but since her computer can't access the cd-rom, it tells her that the best driver is already installed. I had her remove the ide controllers (in device manager), and re-boot, but when it re-installed them the exclamation points were still there. Her BIOS setup shows a hard drive as the primary master, and a cd-rom drive as the primary slave. What else can she do to fix this?? I know that there is a computer wiz around here that has seen this before.....Thanks!!!

I've heard that having both the harddrive and cd-rom on the same IDE cable can be a bad thing. Hey, you've got two IDE plug-ins on the motherboard anyway, why not use it? Can't think of much else... might want to update BIOS just in case? If all else fails, backup and re-clone from the gateway CD. Good luck!

We need more info. What kind of cards are in it? I have seen this happen if you have a Sound Blaster.
