With nothing hooked up to it besides the power cord it will start to boot after plugging in the power cord. This is a new motherboard. ECS K7SEM sis730 and a duron 1G. I tried 2 different power supplies with the same result.

???

Thanks

Any chance that your Power Button is stuck or plugged in wrong on the mobo? Also is there anything touching the pins that the power button plugs into?

I have tried the power button with both polarities but have not checked for things touching. The power button will turn it off when I hold it in but soon as I let go it will reboot...weird.

Sounds like the power button is shorted out somehow.

By any chance do you have the power button plugged into the reset pins and vice versa?

I took all the controls off the mobo to the case and from the top it does not look shorted but it still starts...argh.

Does it still power on when the power switch and other wires from the case are not plugged in? Also what do you have the power supply set to?

<< yes! Only the atx connector is hooked up and both were set to 120 >>

I really dont know what else to tell you, but you may want to RMA your board because it sounds like it is faulty.

It's possible it may just something particular about your motherboard, not saying there is something wrong with it. My kid's pc has a MSI K7T Turbo in it and it does the same thing. If I pulled the power for whatever reason, then I plug it back in or flip the switch behind the Power Supply, it will boot up. I have changed power supplies before and it still did it. I put computers together for a side business and I've noticed several motherboards do this. Everything works flawless with all the motherboards, probably about 5-6 different ones, so I never complained.

It is probably the setting in the bios that says how to start if power was interrupted. Many motherboards default to "On" after a power outage....Just turn this off.
