This may be a long shot, but are you running XP? I had the exact same problem after I installed XP and couldn't figure it out, automatically assuming that it was a hardware problem. It ended up being ZoneAlarm -- some of the slightly older versions don't play nice with XP and in fact crash the OS. The latest version has addressed this problem.
