I just got into this whole game and I have 200 to 300 dollar budget and I was wondering what would be the best buy for me. A home theatre system or something like logitech z680s/promedia 5.1. Is there any difference between them, because from what I know you can hook up the computer speakers up to other things as well. Any ideas

maybe we should start with what you plan on doing with them.

so... what do you plan on doing with them? (ie: just going to be playing games, listening to music, watching movies?)

$300 will get you a good set of PC speakers or a barely there HT setup. Spend just a few bucks more however and you could get a refurbished onkyo reciever and speakers. Check the HD forum.

With only 200-300, I'd suggest getting a kickass set of computer speakers, since that budget won't really allow a decent reciever in addition to speakers...mind you, the Logitech/Klipsch computer speakers are nothing to sneeze at, they're very very good speakers. Maybe upgrade your sound card?

have fun. :)

I was in your situation a few months ago. I decided to go with a new sound card Audigy 2 platinum, Creative Megaworks 5.1 speakers and an external home theatre DVD player with optical sound. I am extremely please with the results. The A2 platinum card has all kinds of sound connector options. This set up makes gaming, DVD and music listening first rate. The home theatre set up for the same price, doesn't match this set up. At least that's my opinion. Also for me, I run my synth and guitar into my computer and there is no way the Home theatre speakers could handle the sound from these.

I should add...this set up is a tad over the $300 you put aside, but if you can do it in steps it's a great way to go.
