my dad came up to me yesterday and said the computer wouldn't load his tax software. I said put the CD in and it will. He said he did that, then accidentally closed the autorun box (not his words). He has no other means of opening the program.

but that is so true

My family thinks I'm a nerd hacker type because I build computers and am capable of installing and uninstalling programs

A few weeks ago I was playing around with a physics SDK and shared some of the results with my wife, and she thought it was 'neat' (maybe "Simply Awsome" [sic] on their graph).

In terms of importance to family/friends, unfortunately, any IT-related skills tangentially acquired trump all of my development/research accomplishments.

People have a higher opinion of my skills than I do. I'm a little beyond "install XP and drivers", but not by much. What separates my skills, and the people I'm doing work for, is I don't give up. The almighty Google has the answer to every problem if you take the time to look :^D
