Computer shutting off seconds after bootup

Hello, i just went to turn on my computer, and it started turning itself off sometimes almost instantly after i turned it on. The odd thing about it is once i got into the bios and checked out the cpu temperature, and i just saw it climbing by 2degrees c per second till it was over like 110, at which point i assume the computer shut itself down because it thought the cpu was going to melt.

I recently had a similar problem and noticed my cpu fan had stopped spinning, so i ordered a new heatsink and fan and they were working fine.

The problem i am facing is, they are still working fine. I thought something was amiss with the readings because i went to touch my heatsink and it was not even lukewarm, just cool to the touch since i JUST booted it up after it had been off for hours.

Is there someway the CPU temp can be malfunctioning and shutting down my computer..? If so is it possible to even fix that?

I am completely puzzled, because it obviously was not 110 Celsius.

Any help would be much appreciated.

(also, i kind of inherrited most of the parts, but it's a core2duo.. i'd have to check the mobo specs.)

If the temps are rising but the cooler is cool then the cooler may not be seated properly. If the CPU starts to overheat its suppose to slow itself down to prevent damage. Its also suppose to sound all sorts of alarms when it happens. So make sure the cooler is mounted properly and making good contact with the CPU. You can tell if its making good contact or not by removing the cooler and seeing how well the TIm is spread on the cooler and the CPU. Just be sure to clean all of the TIM off both and apply a fresh layer before remounting the cooler. If you still encounter the same problem as before you may have other issues.

Possible other issues may be a damaged CPU from when the original cooler died. There is also a chance that the PSU is at fault here. Most often if a PC just powers itself off its a power issue.

Well i took it apart and remembered it felt kind of funny when i put the cooler on. When i took out the heatsink one of the plastic pins was bent, so i straightened it out and it went through the hole it was supposed to. I checked the temperature readings and they were around 30degrees c now at start up which seems a lot more reasonable. I did just transport it from my other house, so maybe something got jarred and became askew. Thanks for the advice. Its running better, sure its only been a minute, but i think that might have done it. Take it easy.
