There is this computer at work which will just shut off on its own. Towards the end of the day it will just kick off. No certain times, just about 6-7 hours after being on. Nothing has been added or changed recently. This is an older Pentium II machine with Windows 98. I replaced the CPU fan and the power supply is still running. I have left it with the case loosely open and it still shuts down. It is not set up in CMOS to shut down for heat. I thought it was overheating, but after replacing the CPU fan and running it with the case opened and cleaning out any dust availabile, it still shuts down on its own. I was thinking of just replacing the power supply to see if that solves the problem. Anyone else have anymore ideas? Thanks alot!!! :)

I have checked through the settings and could not locate anywhere. It is now shutting off more frequently. For now I will replace the pc with a functioning one. How would 3rd party's software affect them? In what ways? Thanks!

I think your PC is just getting tired and wants to rest.

If there is nothing wrong with the power settings, and you dont have any viruses, your PC may be overheating.

I had a PC that would reboot itself after a few hours of use, and then keep rebooting every 10 minutes. Turned out the CPU was overheating and triggering a system reboot. Depending on how ur PC is set up, it might turn off instead.

Try going into bios and UNDERCLOCKING your CPU and video card if possible. If your problem goes away, its probabaly heat related.

Another possibility is that you have a defective power strip, power supply, or motherboard.
