computer shutting down:(

Pentium 4 computer win xp pro less than 1 year old shutting down🙁 Will run for a short while then shutdown. Could a virus be causing this or more likely hardware related? Perhaps malware or spyware?
Any help appreciated
thanks

Comps that usually shut down after a short period of running are usually shutting down due to heat. I would check my processor temps also look at your heatsink and make sure it not all clogged up with dust bunnies.

Any chance it could be software related?
Well, there is always the chance...but like I said reboots after short periods are usually hardware related...but that is just my experience.

To answer you own question, if you are worried about software related problem, do you run any anti-virus/firewall/spyware programs? But like stockjock said, it is probably due to temp problem. Unless you have changed some hardware config...check for dust build up around fans, open slots, air intakes...etc. Try to remove the case window first and blow air at your system. If that helps, obviously, temp is the problem.
