Computer Shutting Down Randomly

Hello everyone:

Within the past days, my computer has been acting oddly.

After my computer is turned on for approximately 5 to 60 minutes, the power suddenly terminates.

When I turn on the computer again, I usually have to wait at least 3 minutes before the BIOS screen comes up (not normal time). Then the BIOS tells me that the CPU temperature was too high, and that the overclocking or overvoltage failed.

However, I have never overclocked this CPU or attempted to give more voltage to my computer. There has not been any thunderstorms or significant weather activity within the past week, and there have not been any electrical adjustments to my home. Also, I have not been running any high-performance or demanding programs on my PC.

I have had my custom-built system for around 2 years now.

Thank you very much in advance!

The BIOS usually doesn't lie about such things. So make sure all your fans are running and get a monitoring program such as SpeedFan to check the temps.

Welcome to the Forums!

Have you tried monitoring your temperature while you're using it?

I would first go in and clean out my case real good to make sure there is good airflow.

Definitely clean your CPU heatsink, these like to get clogged with dust in a relatively short time. Also make sure the CPU/heatsink fan is working and turning freely.

Last thing to check is you BIOS.
There are some innocent looking BIOS settings on many ASUS MB's that if you don't manually turn them off they will try to OC your System components.
I know on mine, as old as it is, there are at least three ways for the MB to OC.

hey welcome to AT. is the system in your sig the one you are having trouble with? also, what is your power supply? on an older system with the parts you have i would be more inclined to question if the PSU is failing. after checking your bios settings get out a multimeter and check the voltages going into the board to see if they are sending more power than they should be.

Hello there,

Thank you to everyone for the replies. I cleaned my CPU fan and heatsink, and applied new thermal paste. The problem has been solved!
