Computer shuts off after 5 seconds of powering on... help!

So I built a custom PC about 6 months ago with the following specs:

Core 2 Duo 6400
Antec 550W TruePower II PSU
2 GB OCZ Gold DDR2 800 RAM
ATI X1800XT 512 MB Video card
Asus P5W DH Deluxe Motherboard
250 GB Western Digital harddrive
Sound Blaster x-fi sound card
thermaltake armor jr case

I've never had a problem with this PC before. But this morning, when I went to power it on it wouldn't turn on. Weird I thought, So I unplugged the power cord to the PSU and plugged it back in and tried to power it on again. It started booting up, and I thought I had the problem solved, but the damn thing shut off about 5 seconds later.

It lets out one beep, like it does normally during bios post, but after it posts it just shuts off a couple seconds later

I'm thinking it is probably the PSU, but I don't have any spare compatible parts around to swap things out and test. There were no lightning strikes or thunderstorms in my area lastnight. Everything was running fine when I went to bed around 2 AM lastnight, but when I go to turn it on around noon today I get this problem.

All the fans are working. I have reseated all cards and the RAM.I checked the CPU HSF/bracket and everything is on solid. I also removed the CMOS battery for 10 minutes and tried booting again, still no luck.

What do you all think? Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Casey

If it will run for a few seconds, it may not be receiving a proper signal from the cpu fan. Either the mb is not picking up the signal, or the signal reads at less than min rpm.

A bad psu usually shuts down almost instantly.

Yea it posts and then a second or two later shuts off. Hmm, could it be the HSF? It is the stock HSF that came with the processor.

Seeing as I just had this same type of problem on my new build, I would suggest trying to get into Bios before it shuts down and check the PC Health tab and see what your CPU temp is before shut down.

Yeah, can you go into BIOS? As jackschmitt said, this sounds more like a HSF problem at first, so see if it is that first. Hopefully it is, because the other problems that could be causing this probably mean RMA.

I guess I can make my way down to bestbuy, pick up a new HSF if they carry them and test this out before i try RMAing stuff.
