Computer shuts itself off after about 5-10 seconds!

I got my MSI K8N Neo2 Plaitnum back from a RMA the other day. When i tried turning on the computer, it would turn itself off after around 5-10 seconds. I tried disconecting everything but the cpu (3200+ Winnie), ram, and video card, but the same thing happens. I even tried resetting the heatsink to make sure that the CPU isnt overheating (theres also a >2000RPM fan plugged into the cpu fan header so thats not the problem either). The only thing that i really havent tried is ripping the mobo out of the case. Does anyone know what the problem might be??? (BTW, i could get into the bios, but it shuts off b4 i can actually do anything)

Can you get into BIOS long enough to check the temperatures?

You power switch may be shorted (holding the power switch down 6 seconds forces a computer to shut down). Try connecting the reset switch as the power switch as a test, and use that to turn it on.

Have you tried resetting the CMOS?

Why did you RMA the board?

Does the BIOS (POST) flash long enough to see the version number?
Your 3200+ (Winchester) requires BIOS version 1.4 or higher.

I can get into the bios, but not long enough to do anything (trust me, i tried 😉 )
I actually havent tried using a different power switch, but im pretty sure thats not the issue since the computer turns off as soon as i hit the switch (which means that it might not be shorted???) Ill try removing the switch completely and just shorting the 2 pins just to make sure.
I have tried resetting the CMOS, didnt help in my case.

I RMA'ed the board because the AGP slot died on me.

The bios version was 1.5B2 (beta bios?? :S). If im not wrong, 90nm processors have been compatible with the mobo since Bios version 1.3. Anyways, im pretty sure that the bios is not the issue.......unless they gave me a mobo with a bad bios flash 😡 (could that be possible, a corrupted bios????)

Thx guys for the suggestions, ill try the power button thing now, but dont let that stop you from giving more suggestions 😉

Edit - Update:

Ok.......i tried just shorting the 2 power pins........same story 🙁

You most likely did not need to RMA that motherboard. Your issue most like is an undersized non-quality power supply. You should be using a 400w+ quality power supply.

LOL, I did need to RMA the board. It WAS a dead AGP slot (tried a few different AGP video cards....didnt work....however, when I threw in a PCI video card, it worked fine). Although I dont like my powersupply, its probably not at fault unless my Enermax 460W (non-niosetaker....grrrrrr) magically died on me......spontaneously.... while waiting for the mobo to get back from RMA. If the problem is due to hardware.....I would most likely have to blame my CPU or mobo. Unfortunetly, i cant really test either of them because I dont know anyone else with a s939 rig. Thx for the sugesstions anyways, and hopefully I can solve this problem without having to RMA anything (took four weeks to get my mobo back from MSI 🙁). Keep the sugesttions coming guys 😉. (I might try a different PSU a lil later, but im a lil to busy/lazy to rip it out of my other computer....spent like a few hours managing the wires :S)

1.3 or higher 😉

I've got a Athlon64 board at work that does the same thing......after testing everything it came down to a bad motherboard. Looks like you got unlucky and got another bum board.

RMA #2 it looks like.

good luck! 🙂

.......!!!!! How confident are you that its a bad mobo???

That would depend on the vendor your purchased from and if you
recieved a REFURBISHED board in return.

My Vote is for bad board also.

Note: according to MSI's CPU compatiblity\motherboard chart listed on
their website, the AMD (Winchester) is supported with BIOS v1.4 or higher.

well, since the one at work here exhibits the same symptoms as yours and has been found to be bad for sure, then i'd say very confident.

And the one at work here isn't even a refurb like yours, which always gives worse odds.

sorry, hope they rma quickly 🙂
