Hello, everyone.
After I tried upgrading my CPU yesterday, my computer shuts down seconds after being powered on. However, when I take the CPU out the system stays on. I have tried everything I could think of, including the suggestions on threads describing similar issues, but with no luck. I wonder whether someone here can help me.
I have a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L motherboard which has been running with an Intel Core2 Duo E6750 CPU for the past five years. The CPU had been running slow and very hot (70-95 C) recently so I decided to upgrade to an Intel Core2 Quad Q9550 CPU bought off eBay. I took out my old CPU and heat sink and installed the new one. I wanted to see whether it would work first, so I booted up my system without installing the heat sink. The system made it past the POST but then died while loading the
OS boot loader.
I then installed the heat sink but the system kept dying at various points between POST and OS login. I tried again and went into the BIOS, where I could see the CPU temperature climb up steadily to 105 C before the system shut down. At this point, I decided to go back to my old CPU because I suspected the new one might be 'bad'. However, I had the exact same issue with the old CPU even though it had been working fine before the 'upgrade'.
I waited a while and tried both CPUs and now when I turn the system on, it only stays on long enough so that the fans start up but then immediately shuts down. I don't even see the BIOS screen anymore.
Curiously, when I take the CPU out and hit the power button, the system remains on with the fans running and the GPU very briefly sending a signal to my monitor. I have reset the CMOS several times by touching the 'CLR_CMOS' pins with a screwdriver, checked for any cosmetic defects on the capacitors and tried to install the heat sink as snugly as possible. At this point, I'm out of ideas and would like to discount anything obvious left before I consider buying a new motherboard/CPU combination.
One thing I have noticed is that some of the CPU socket pins look a bit bent. Here is a picture- http://imgur.com/OjpVeVF. I'm not sure whether this is a cause for concern.
I'd really appreciate it if someone could help me identify the problem with my system.
Thanks!
