Computer shuts down after waking from sleep/hibernate

I have a desktop built in 2009 that has suddenly developed a problem in the past 1-2 weeks. There has been zero new hardware changes during that time, except for the colder weather. It is also running XP.

Computer goes to sleep every night, and I wake it up in the day time to use it. Now, it will still wake up and go to the desktop, but after a few seconds it will shut off, as if the power was cut off. And it will reboot itself on its own, start up again, and everything will be fine/stable.

I've only tested this once, but if I put it into standby, and then wake it up again a few minutes later, it worked fine without shutting off. But leave it overnight and it will shut off. Sounds like a hardware issue? Any times to troubleshoot? Anyone have seen something like this in the past? I don't have any extra hardware sitting around to test individual components, so if it is unsalvagable or undeterminable I will have to move on, build something new. Thanks!

Sounds like it could be the power supply. BonzaiDuck can relate his story of what long-term sleep mode does to PSUs. Apparently, since the fan shuts down, they slowly cook themselves.

I only use monitor sleep mode, I leave the main box running 24/7.

Thanks, that's good to know. Hopefully he can chime in here. I have a software that was part of the motherboard and it gives me some voltages, but I don't know how to interpret whether it is within normal range or not:

CPU: 1.23-1.34V
NB: +1.25V 1.28V
DRAM: 1.91V
SB +1.5V: 1.52V
VTT: 1.19-1.21V
ATX +12V: 12.16V
ATX +5.0V: 4.61-4.69V
VBAT +3.0V: 3.15V

Forgot to mention this problem happens with both standby and hibernate.

the +5V rail is low as Larry said it`s prolly time for a new supply....may also be a bad system battery as that VBAT is when the unit is running as in it`s charging state..have you checked your bios settings has any thing changed there....is the fan in the power supply running when the unit is on......a few simple things to check..
