So I had my Ipod plugged in and for some reason my computer made a weird noise and shut it self off. I've had this problem before as well. I've always assumed a faulty power supply was the cause of this because I had noticed the fan on the back had slowed down significantly.

So i turn my computer back on and Itunes is now unable to recognize my ipod though windows has no problem recognizing the hardware. I've tried everything apple recommended to get my itunes to recognize it but no luck.

I tried other devices such as a memory key and my printer and i'm getting the same problem with those devices. Windows recognizes it's been plugged in but when i try accessing the memory key from windows it first hangs for a bit then i get an error when i try clicking on the drive in windows explorer. I get a similar problem when I try to install software fo rmy printer if i run it through a USB port. Windows recognizes it's been plugged in but the software won't disallowing me to be able to use my printer via USB.

When I took a look at my computer physically I noticed ther fan for the power supply was completely shot. As weird as it sounds, Can this be the cause of my problem?? Is it possible there's a lack of power coming through to my USB ports not allowing it to function as needed.

Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance :)

Forst of all check the motherboard for any buldging capacitors. Its possible that teh voltage regulating circut on the motehrbaord is shot. Is it was a PSU probelm the system whould be exhibiting more probalem then the USB ports not working. If everything looks good then try clearing the CMOS. Some times the data stored in teh CMOS gets a bit of curruption. Your probalm with the USB ports is often a result of the curption. Cearing the CMOS generally fixs the problem. Check your motehrboard's manuel for how to do this. Generally its a matter of finding teh right jumper on the board. Shut off the system, unplug the system from teh wall, move the jumper, move it back and your all set.
