Computer shopping - when to buy?

Since this is so general, I figured an ATOT discussion might be the best place for this.

Most people know that when purchasing a new vehicle, the best time to buy is right after the release of the new year's models. Depending on the model and the company, this can be between late Spring and early Winter. After the new models begin shipping to the dealerships, they need to clear out the older models, and usually offer larger rebates and better financing to help that process out.

But what about computer parts? Of course it depends on when next-generation fabrication and iterations of chipsets/CPUs begin to hit shelves, but in general, I've always felt like the post-Christmas holiday season is a great time to purchase computer electronics from Newegg and the like, independent of release cycles of newer technology.

The upshot of all of this is that I'm going to have a few bucks to spend on a new rig in January. Does ATOT think this will be a good time to strike? Or are there any major Intel/AMD releases eminent that will really make waiting another couple of months worthwhile?

TL;DR: Is early January a cheap time to put together a new box?

I've got my new board, PSU and memory. I'm holding out until January for my graphics card and CPU because:

1) the scarcity of the 8800GTs and 3970s are pushing prices up. That should be rectified by January.

2) I believe Intel is releasing the QX9650 in January which will hopefully push down some of the quad core and Core 2 chip prices.

It doesn't matter. You are almost always guaranteed that whatever you buy is going to be worth half the price in 6 months when the the next best things come out.

From past exp. Black Friday at Fry's...get those cpu combo deals, and cheap after MIR rams...
so ya...since we passed it this year...just wait for deals to come up and buy all parts when they are on sale.
