Ok this is the wrong section of the forums for this question but I couldnt find an appropiate place.

Anyways, I live in sweden and Im going to New York for one week over christmas and I thought I would buy a new computer while Im "over there".

The problem is that I really cant find any good computer shops in the NYC area. All stores Ive found such as http://www.compusa.com/, http://www.radioshack.com, http://www.datavis.com/, http://www.circuitcity.com, www.J&R.com and so one are not specialized on computers and dont have the stuff Im looking for. I need a store with a wide sortiment, Q6600 with the G0 stepping, 8800 gts 512mb (G92) and Crucial DDR2 BallistiX PC8500.

Over and out!

Unfortunately there are no Fry's or Microcenters anywhere near NYC, although I really, really, wish there were. I hate to say it, but there really isn't anything these days but Circuit City or Best Buy. J&R may have a better selection of parts, but there isn't a store where you can literally walk down the motherboard isle. If you're staying a while, I would take advantage of ordering from Newegg, et. al. They should ship to your hotel.

Mark.

I thought both were over in New Jersey.

Apparently I am mistaken. Thanks for the clarification.

There is according to microcenters homepage: http://www.microcenter.com/at_the_stores/index.html

Long island, is that far from manhattan where Ill be staying? Not that it matters that much, they havnt got what Im looking for anyways, at least not on the webpage. So far Newegg is the only good shop Ive found. Unfortunatly its too late to order now I guess. Damn I thought NYC had everything

Edit: there gotta be a smaller computer shop or something, any new yorkers here??

you would need to take the 7 train to the last stop in flushing

(there's prob more but thats the only one I drive by) :(

oh btw your better off either going to microcenter in LI
or ordering it from newegg and have it shipped to where your staying
if you want the lowest prices (any little place you goto in nyc is going to cost a tad bit more)

nope dont bother wasting your money in NYC PC stores...

i've lived in NYC brooklyn my entire life and have always bought my tech stuff online.
and btw newegg doesn't always have the best price these days. my last pc upgrade i didn't buy any parts from newegg... its a shame

Chinatown in lower manhattan has a good amount of PC shops that are open to bargaining... if u buy a good amount of parts at once they will definitely give u a discount!

I have lived in NYC almost all my life as well (manhattan, born there).

I would agree that today there is no real pc stores. One of the stores I mentioned in my post was a korean town pc store.

It is my opinion though that a lot of those ones have older stuff and will often try to dump that on unsuspecting clients.

Actually, there is/was (haven't been there very recently) a decent one on Orchard.

Boy has chinatown grown ;)

Yes, but thats a bit late now, I guess Newegg is closed over christmas. I didnt think I would have to order online when visiting such a big city... crap. Guess I buy a ps3 or something else funny.

But I think I will skip the computer and buy it at home, its not worth the all the work + I dont have to send it to the us if something is broken. Now I have to figure out something else to buy hehe :)

There is No real computer stores in NYC, there use to be few in Queens, but they were too small to compete, and disappeared.

L.I?s Microcenter is too far for public commuting and their prices are Not so great.

In today?s world, you have to be like NewEgg, and some of the others that maintain Warehouses (or UPS warehousing) in few key geographical places in the USA.

Most of Newegg stuff shipped to New York is coming from New Jersey.

That said in Manhattan there are many UPS stores. Email Newegg, they might be willing to organize shipment of items to one of these UPS stores that is close to where you are going to stay, and you can pick it up there.

Enjoy NYC, the city is nice during this time of the year, do not forget to go and see the Big Lighted tree (5th Ave @ 51st street).

If you do want the "Imitation" Gifts, Canal street is the place to go.

Lexington Ave Subway No. 6 going Downtown would take you there.

Yeah, I tried finding one the other day but the only thing that comes close is Microcenter. There used to be one around the upper 30s on the east side but I think they closed that one long ago

As it seems, Microcenter is the best choice, they have got the Q6600 to a pretty low price, 280 dollars and they have the 8800GTS with the G92 core. I can buy the rest at home. Its not that much of a differende in the cheaper parts anyway.
