This becomes especially annoying in first-person shooters and games such as Asheron's Call.... my MP3's will keep playing in the background and I can move my mouse around but my computer will seem to "freeze", this also happens when im just chatting online or browsing the web..
Running WinXP, amd XP2000 with 512mb RAM

Has anyone else experienced problems like this? and if so what are some possible solutions..

Thanks for the assitance

It happens even when I'm not playing any MP3's.... and I use Winamp2.8

My point with that more than anything else is that sound tends to continue while my computer seems temporarily "froze"

When it got warmer this season, my pc started freezing during games as well. It was getting too hot and the video card was screwing up.

Just another base to cover in your search.

I even tried underclocking the video card to no avail...

Thanks for the input regardless :)

Are you sure it's not just HDD cashing?

It can also be texture loading to your video card's mem...
And what is your video card BTW.

Most probebly since you have 512MB RAM it's something running in the background.

What mobo are you using? If it's a VIA board, have you installed the latest 4in1's?

Make sure you have the latest BIOS, chipset drivers and IDE drivers for your system. Also don't overclock anything.

I'd look at your task manager and see if you can figure out which process it sucking up the CPU cycles. Maybe you've got something running in the background that periodically uses a lot of CPU power.
Also, I suggest scanning for spyware/adware if you ever use warez on your machine (which you shouldn't do anyway) or install shareware.

I've experienced the same thing on my P4 Rig while playing MOHAA... It's most likely the auto save mode in the game that causes the temporary "freeze" you're seeing. That's what I was seeing in MOHAA. See if you can turn that off in your game, if possible.
