I have here a fairly old computer that has windows 3.1 installed on it. When they when into work today it was not on/responding. So they restarted it and nothing happened. You would hear the HD. spin up as it got power but no post beep. But no beep at all for that matter.

Here is what I have tried.
I switched out the monitor with a good one.
I switched the PSU with a good one.
I switched the ram with a good stick.
I switched the Hd. with a good one.

I then removed every card from the system. I left in the ram and got some post code. As far as I could tell it was for a graphics card. I found this out by putting back the graphics card back in and it didn?t beep any more.
I removed the ram and it gave me a post error from the speaker stating it has no ram.
I have reset the cmos and that doesn?t help.
I have tried the old Hd. in another machine and it is good.
I could not switch out the video card or the i/o card yet because they are VESA cards. And I don?t have any of these laying around. I don?t have any ISA either.

It shows nothing on the monitor. And the monitor doesn?t switch from sleep mode to on mode... I don?t know what you would actually call it. When it doesn?t have a signal but is connected to a video card the light blinks. When it gets a signal the monitor comes on and the light it steady on.... but the light never comes on.

It also doesn?t hit the Hd. or the floppy, so it is not getting through the boot up.

So far I am on the assumption that it is the mobo that is dead. I am reasoning this because neither the video card or the io card are getting used. It should try to access the Hd. at some time, but it doesn?t.

Any ideas? Other than replacing the mobo that is. I cant get one until tomorrow. So I want to exhaust all my options first.

the computer will give u beep codes if you don't have a video card in there. if the mobo is dead, it will most likely not give u those beep codes that yo ugot before. however, there still is a chance that the mobo is shot (mine was shot and yet gave me correct beep codes for things i didn't put in) I'd say try a new CPU.

Sounds like you already know what it is :|
I figure it's the mobo too.

I would say just old age killed it. But if you really want to replace it I've seen 486 boards online and at computer shows for like $5.00. Worth a try I guess.

I might do that for 5 buck it wont kill me.

I would perfer them to just switch over to a newer computer with win2k in it.
