Computer Security, IM, Proxy, etc....

Hi all--

I've got a little problem here...

Turn out my employer is now playing the role of Big Brother, i.e., they have injected some utility or some problem that randomly throughout the day edits the registry on all computers and changes the Proxy4 and Proxy5 settings to a specific proxy so they can route and record all traffic.

The problem is that I cannot locate what the heck is changing the registry, nor can I stop it. Even if I change the proxy back, either in messenger or within the registry, in no time at all, it's changed back to what the company wants it to be.

I am using Secway (SIMP) to encrypt conversations, but if the proxy is changed in messenger to use something other than the proxy specified by Secway (SIMP), the ecryption software is no good until I change it back to what it needs to connect through SIMP...

AGGGHHHHH!!!!! Can any of you help me out here? Suggestions? I've tried locking down the registry keys responsible for holding the messenger proxy values, but no go...

This belongs in Networking, not Highly Technical. When you ask there, they'll tell you they won't help you get around your office's security setup.

If your computer belongs to a domain, every single setting that the computers inside the domain must have will automagically find its way to your computer. Try taking your computer out of the domain, and your settings will remain the way you like

And then you will get a smack on the hand from the IS tech who has to come over to your desk to re-add you to the domain because <whiny user>"I can't connect to my drives..."</whiny user>

Get another job. Possibly one without a computer.

PM me the email address of your IT's Manager. I will contact him/her and explain your concerns and ask them to make an exception.

Use a different client that doesn't use those registry keys. Jabber is a nice open source IM framework that might offer some help.

The proxy I administer uses transparent bridging, so there is no possible way to get around it. 😛 Well I guess a user could use an anonymity proxy outside of our network via SSL, but we'd still track that they're going to that site (at least until the Anonymity Proxies category was updated and blocked them from it).

Gaim would work.The encyprtion uses public/private kiey pairs so no need to worry about the proxy.

Best sugguestion stop trying to get yourself fired. If there's a legitimate business reason why you need to use secure chat go to your boss to get IT to change things so you can do it. Otherwise any company i've worked for intentionally trying to bypass the proxy like that is a terminatable offense. The proxy is there to make sure your not looking at things you shouldn't be (porn etc) or just wasting time.
