Computer restarts when I try to shut down, help please!!

Currently on Windows XP:

For the past few week or two, everytime I hit shut down, the computer restarts instead, i've tried everything I could find on the internet, any ideas or suggestions please? I really wouldn't prefer to format, but if I have to, I will. Please help me out! Thanks.

This has been answered a million times on the forum, but I did a search and couldn't find anything.

Before the problem started, did you change anything?

Opened up my case and cleaned it, re did wiring to attempt better airflow, all i can remember, even did system restore to day before, same problem. I tried to search on forums too, but couldnt find. Hopefully someone will find so i can fix this thing becuase i am tried of turning it off from the back switch. also, i have noticed that the computer makes like 10 tries to boot up, like it turns on, restarts itself several times till it finds its way to the asus screen, dont know how to explain, but anyways, one problem at a time. thanks for the quick reply though.

i had that happen to me... believe it was after i had installed something.
it irritated the hell out of me for a week, always had to hit the power switch to get it to really shut down

then i installed some other program/game, and just like it had started, it went away.... i never did find out what caused it
