Computer restarts about every 20 secs

I put my computer into my dorm room today and it now restarts every few seconds. I can even go into the BIOS and it still restarts by itself. Check my rig for what I'm running.

<<I put my computer into my dorm room today and it now restarts every few seconds>>

Where was it before then? Has it ever exhibited this behavior in other locations? Have you tried other plugs? Maybe one in another dorm room or another building?

I've had this in the bldg before... but in another room. I've never seen it happen before.. I don't know if it's apower problem or what, but it's so insane I don't know where to start on this problem

That is strange. The only time I have had that problem was on a machine that was set to 220 istead of 115 on the psu. It cuased it to restart no matter what. Although it was more than 20 seconds between restarts.

The setting was 115... I changed the power cord and I still have the problem. It seems like theres a short or something, but I still dont know where to start looking. There's no electronic device or anything nearby that hasn't been around before. This is just odd.

Try checking your video card and make sure its seeted well. Might not hurt to check the cpu and memory to make sure its good and seeted also. Just give the inside a good look over making sure nothing is loose. Sometimes they can work loose when moved around.

Okay I opened her up, and found a memory stick slightly loosened, so I snapped that back into place. I might try switching surge protectors if this doesn't do the truck.

Well I kicked it accidentally and it went off. So i kept kicking the crap out of my computer and it kept restarting like clockwork. SO I looked inside again, and found that my video card was in a slot that pressed down on a large capacitor. So I moved it to another slot (yes it's PCI unfortunately) and after kicking it, it didn't restart.

YAY, I learned a new troubleshooting technique......kick the crap outta your computer til it works.

😀

Alright guys, I know this is the most retarded problem ever, but it's still happening. I've switched surge protectors to see what happens......

bump.... i think there has to be a short in SOMETHING in my box... Im guessing power supply. Although I don't see what could have screwed up my power supply just by *carefully* moving it into this room.

the stupidest problem i have ever seen.......

If you can, check and see if the mobo was installed correctly. (I.E. Was there any extra risers left in that could be shorting the mobo and is any of the screw heads possible touching the lead from a nearby component.)
