computer restarting

system is WinXP Pro on Asus A7V, Athlon 700 with 512MB Crucial RAM.
occasionally (no more than once a day) the system restarts on its own (as if one were to press the hard restart button). Booting has become slower since this problem arose and the Virtual Memory setting gets reset to 0MB upon reboot.

I don't think its the RPC exploit. The system is patched and up-to-date with virus definitions (AVG) and sits behind both a SMC SPI router and ZoneAlarm.

PSU is a 300W Antec, connected to an AVR capable UPS. CPU temp is 54C. There are 5 fans:
PSU
front intake
back expel
stock CPU HSF
stock video HSF

There are 3 RAM sticks (all being detected).

What could be causing this? What can I test for?

is the PS fan running? Its it over heating? Have you checked for the W32.Welchia Worm? I know it would auto restart PCs .

Random Restarts can be attributed to anyone of the following:

1 - PSU Failing
2 - Overheating (have you oc'ed anything recently)
3 - Virus/Trojan/Worm
4 - Bad Memory/Memory Leak (run memtest86)
5 - Hardware problem

I had something similiar to this a while ago, and when I checked Event Viewer/Error Message on BSOD, it shows a Driver conflict with my Logitech Optical Mouse. Now, I did not have the patience to roll back the driver, so I reformated/reinstalled the OS. My suggestions would be to check the Event Log or write down the BSOD error messgaes. If you have WinXP automatically reboot on error, uncheck that so you can get a BSOD with a specific error message. Just to be on the safe side, run an online virus scann (www.trojanscan.com/housecall.antivirus.com) just to ensure that nothing is there that AVG did not catch. Run memtest to check your memory. What are your voltage rails on your PSU? What are your temps like?

All fans are running to spec. Not overclocked. Memtest found no errors. Ran HD diagnostics - no problems. Ran trojanscan.com - nothing.
Temp: CPU 54C, Mobo 35C, Room 22C

This is my current PSU: http://antec-inc.com/specs/p303x_spe.html
Voltages are within 5% (is that too much?)

No BSOD. Windows is not crashing, the power is.

Within 5% is acceptable for voltage rails. Since it is an Antec, it should be reliable.

As far as the No BSOD, you stated that your computer is restarting (not shutting off only), right? If that is the case, it is restarting for a reason. By default, Windows XP automatically reboots without giving you a BSOD which would potentially help you determine what the true problem of the restart is. You can also get some clues from event viewer. If you have never changed this default, you will NEVER get a BSOD because Windows XP will automatically restart, thus Random restarts.....Again, BSOD are not just OS crashes, but HArdware crashes, conflicts, etc, etc, etc, etc.

Therefore, please confirm if you truly have changed the default setting under Windows XP (in Control Panel) to NOT automatically restart. Also, let us know what you can find in the Event View Log (Control Panel, Administration) as to possible clues on what the computer was doing when it restarted.

Hi Sammy5000,

Sorry to butt in but my comp would also restart after I try to overclock my barton 2500+ on an asus A7N8X dlx MB with a sk-7 hs and a 80m fan on top. My memory is 2 x Buffalo Tech pc3200 256mb. The ps is Antec Tru430.

I had the fsb at 200 x 11 @ 1.65. Does it mean that my voltage is too low???

When it goes back to default, all seems ok.

Any thoughts on what I can check or adjust???

Thx

from event viewer, I get these on startup:

I've now switched off the auto restart

Hey nycdude - to answer your question, if you are oclocking, and you are experiencing random restarts, raising your vcore could make it more stable, but remember, raising your vcore also increases heat on your cpu, so check your temps. What I would do is run Prime95 to stress your CPU. If you can run Prime95's torture test for more than 12 hours w/o errors/fails, then your cpuoverclock is stable. As for your vcore, the overall objective would be to overclock on default vcore, but if you must raise your vcore, do not go over 1.75!!!!!! I have heard of some horror stories. In short, run Prime95 (search for it on google), and see how long it lasts. If it starts failing quickly, raise your vcore step by step and rerun Prime 95. If it still causes problems, then you may have capped on your overclock, which I would find strange as your cpu is a great overclocker.

Hey Saythan... This looks like a problem with your virtual memory and i/o of your hdds. I have never experienced this specific problem before, but I did a quick search on google about the specific error message you got (53f5630d). Check this Linky out for some info on it.

How old is your PSU, couple years? I love antec's, great PSU's, but I had a 300 watt Antec go bad on me (just got old, and I ran the comp 24/7 for several years straight) The PSU fan actually wore out, stopped running... ALL of your voltages seem ok?

+5: 4.972
+3.3: 3.488

Case fan: 4470

Antec PSU is a bit over 3 yrs old

if the tpkd driver is the culprit, based upon filedate I know what installed it: M-audio Uno USB MIDI interface/software bundle

I had the same problem, simply due to Vcore too low.

My 8RDA+ failed, replaced it with NFSV2, and used same Vcore setting in BIOS. The Abit board seems to under-volt. Operation was fine until I ran a game to load-test - rebooted itself under load.

Try bumping your Vcore a bit.

Hope this helps!
