when i shutdown my computer it then restarts instead of powering off.

so far i have tryed
- updating my motherboard bios (did not work)
- it restarted on both windows and linux installations

does this sound like a problem with my motherboard ? powersupply ? or possibly something else.

PowerSupply = Antec TruPower 430
Motherboard = Abit NF7-S rev2

if any more information is needed i will post accordingly

thanks !

I've seen behavior like that from a grounding problem or short. It could also be a flaky PSU, but due to the way ATX power supplies are controlled that is less likely (the PSU shouldn't turn on unless the MB tells it to.)

Maybe try pulling the MB out of the case and running it on a non-conductive surface to eliminate grounding?

Any chance that the machine is hitting a software problem (e.g. blue screen) and then rebooting before it gets the chance to power off (the default behavior from XP)?

To change this, right click on my computer, choose advanced, startup and recovery, and uncheck "automatically restart"

Then, if the computer crashes during shutdown, it won't automatically restart...

Is it doing this when you push the power button on the case, or when you restart through software, or both? If it's the case button, you've plugged the wires into the wrong ports on the motherboard.

Check your "Power Options" in Windows XP Control Panel. You might have an advanced setting changed to do nothing etc.

My best guess if it happens in all operating systems is motherboard/psu trouble.

Edit: DOH! Sorry did not notice the Linux use. <points to post below>

the computer HAD worked great for over a year , and then we lost for afew days, and when the power returned the problem started.

so im alittle unsure which piece of hardware is causing the problem.

the first time i booted that pc after the outage it said "un supported cpu" on startup. a quick reload of default settings fixed that. but now it still continues to restart upon shutdown.
