Computer Renaissance, what a joke

Have any of you guys ever been to this store? This place is a laughing stock!

They sell new custom built computers, and used computers. Both of which are incredibally overpriced. And they dont give you much for your used computers, obviously.
Their parts are very overpriced. Its not uncommon for them to charge $50 for a standard junky pci winmodem, or say $30 for a junky sound card or 100bt NIC.

And the worst part is the lack of testing and quality of their used parts. NEVER and I mean never ever buy a dvd/cd-rom drive from these guys or a hard drive. Same can probably be said for cpus and other parts as well.

I had a friend who would sell these guys hard drives that didnt work or were going bad and theyd buy them from him, and once he even sold an overclocked computer to them! LOL.
He asked one of their employees about how they test them, and appartently they just pop in their windows cd and install the OS on the computer, and if it installs successfully they assume that the computer works just fine. They could care less if its overclocked or not.

Wow, just wow.
 
I have pretty much laughed my ass off everytime I have gone into that place. The folks in that store dont know jack, but that is no reason for your friend to sell broken hard drives. Thats just wrong.
 
We had a Computer Renaissance in Sacramento, but it went out of business. I used to like digging thru all their junk bins back in the day.
 
I sold some 1GB Wide SCSI drives to the Computer Renaissance in Flint years ago. Other than the fact that they gave you cash for computer parts they were useless.
 
stores like that are a prime example of the benefits of education

i.e. educate yourself about computers, you'll know that you shouldn't be paying that much

i sold them crappy computers that were getting thrown out at my school, and made a few bucks. and sometimes i sold them parts i had no use for.

never bought anything from them though.

i went in there one time to get a "crossover" cable.

said i wanted a crossover cable, they took me to audio cables. I said no its for a network. They took me over to network cabling (they didnt have seperate they made their own) and the guy asked what length, wanted only a 3ft cable so he cut off 3ft and attempted to make a cable.
First time couldn't do it right.
Second time made it, but it wasnt a crossover cable, it was a regular cable.
Thrid time i showed him what to do, he did it, finally i had my cable
Then they charged me $#@$#@ $8 for said 3ft cable.
never went back since.

Wrong, yes, but it's the responsibility of the store to test products before handing over cash. For example, you could try to bring in a scratched (unusable) PS2 game to a gamestop, but they'll never give you anything for it because their employees at least know how to check if the game still works. A bad hard drive isn't that difficult to check.

From the sound of things, the employees at these stores really don't know what's going on. The store should hire some experts.

LOL, so they charged you 8 bucks for teaching the guy working there how to make a crossover cable? 😀

Good point. I'm not even sure if bringing in a busted hard drive is that wrong, because sometimes a store can fix a hard drive like that, depending on what the problem is. Now the wrong part might possibly be in not informing the store of the problems that the drive was having. Especially if you knew something was broken.
But its still the responsibility of the store to figure that out too. Some people could perhaps unknowingly sell the store a bad hard drive (suppose they got some computer parts for free from a school, but had no means of testing them) And a customer could end up buying that part, expecting to get a working part only to be disappointed..

Thats what really ticks me off: Because the store doesnt test their products very well they sell many crappy products to customers in return.

A long time ago when I didnt know better I tried bying a dvd drive from them to find out it didnt work, and returned it for another which didnt work either, so i returned that back for cash.

Pitiful that I got sold 2 drives in a row that didnt work. I had 7 days to figure that out (their return policy) or I would have been screwed.

One could argue that its not fair to sell them products that dont work, but at the same time its not fair for them to sell you products that dont work either.
