Computer refuses to boot after first try

Its late, i'm frustrated but here goes:

I put my new computer together, connected everything, doulbe checked connections and thought I was ready to go. I hit power, and the fans start churning, but then it suddenly turns itself off. I got no BIOS screen or anything. Then after that, it refuses to power up again. I hit power button and get nothing. ARGGGGH, building a computer isn't rocket science, why must this thing hate me so much. I've reset CMOS, and tried to power up, and it won't do it. The Power supply is brand spankin new 300 watt supply. What could this be? Is the processor bad? I bought the 1.4 tbird with 3 year warranty and followed directions to the letter. Here are specs... though I think there must be something really simple I'm missing. Oh, as for motherboard shorting out, its only connected to my mobo base plate by the connectors there by default.

MSI board on KT266a (red one)
1.4 ghz tbird
Enlight case
Gainward gf2 ultra

Anybody have any idea why it refuses to turn itself on after the first time?

First, double check the jumpers on your mobo and verify they are positioned correctly. Next check your PSU by using a paperclip to jumper the green wire with one of the black ones (with the PSU plugged in). The PSU should power up (fan should spin). If it doesn't, then PSU may be your problem. If the PSU powers up, try booting with the mobo completely out of the case. If that doesn't work, try jumpering the power on switch instead of using the power button.

That method for testing the PS was very useful. My power supply was indeed not working, but that wouldn't explain why it managed to turn on that first time and never again. I'm wondering if there is a way to fix this power supply, since for that first boot it did work. When I put a different power supply in, my computer came up with the error (through its dled system) that the processor was bad. I noticed a very funky odor in the air too when it started up this time. Did I fry my CPU? I bought the AMD retail 1.4, and I followed the directions to the letter. Yeesh, what would be some other signs for the cpu being damaged. Also, since the cpu is damaged (according to motherboard diagnostics) is the mainboard also gone?
