Computer Rebooting all the time. HELP?

Hi Guys,

My machine is rebooting more and more often. Every time I try to run a game or more than one program at a time, it just reboots or comes up with a program error and closes one program. It has gotten to the point where I can basically just browse and do a cople of other things or it will reboot. At the begining, it was working fine, and then I started noticing that it would sometimes reboot when running too many programs or something that was really processor intensive, but now it's just unusable.

I have tried reinstalling windows 2000 from scratch on a new HD, but once it finishes with the 4 installation disks, it dies with a memory error or invariably reboots.

It is an AMD XP-1900 on a PC Chips 830LR motherboard, 512MB DDR, with a 60G HD, runing Windows 2000 SR3.

Any ideas on how to diagnose this would be greatly appreciated.

What are your CPU and case temperatures? It should give them in BIOS somewhere.
What powersupply are you using - brand and watts?

Are you confident that your RAM is good?

I had bought the ram brand new over the summer from mushkin. it's a 512MB pc2100 ddr stick. (this was in august).
It worked fine when i first got it to install and worked fine without rebooting or problems for the first few months.

Any way i can test it?

Also, Check The Event Viewer (Administrative Tools > Event Viewer) for any system or application error logs, they may provide some insight.

Did you install the SiS Service Pack for your motherboard? Did you install anything else off the motherboard disk?

That board is essentially an ECS K7S5A so it's normally quite stable. 300W PSU should be fine for your system providing it's not faulty. I have built several ECS K7S5A + Athlon XP 2000+ + DDR Memory systems that all run fine with ADT 300W PSU's.

i have run memtest and it didn't report any errors.

checking the bios for the temperatures it reports:

System Temp 93 F
CPU Temp -131 F (is that correct?)
CPU fan ~4600 rpm

I have not installed the SiS Service Pack for the motherboard or any other software that came with the motherboard disk.

I will check the even viewer.
I am still stumped.

Have you went into the bios and set it to optimal settings? You can also try the RAM in the other memory slot, and I would also run diagnostics on the hdd to be certain there are no bad sectors, clusters, or other issues with it.

HD is fine.
It is really weird that it reboots every time there is some processor intensive activity like many programs running or a game loading.

Does the -131 degrees F sound right? that doesn't seem right for some reason.

It totally sounds like bad memory.. Some locations in memory might be bad and whenever you have enough programs running, it increases the probability of hitting that bad memory and the program/OS would crash/reboot.
I've had a case where memtest didn't find any errors even though a few months earlier it did (on the same bad stick).
Borrow some memory from someone and try that, just to eliminate the possibility. and don't forget to try the other memory slot like someone suggested.

Ok guys,

to come back to this.
i've been really busy with work lately so i didn't get a chance to mess up with my home computer.

I tried last night a few more things.
I placed the memory in the other slot, and all of a sudden it didn't crash right away anymore. It ran fine with quite a lot of programs for a few good hours. It did eventually crash once, but that could have been just a fluke.

So any ideas what might have been wrong? Also how come it was a progresivly worse problem. It started by rebooting only every once in a while until it got to the point where it almost could not run anymore.

Thanks for the help and any ideas you might have.

Thoughs temps are way off. Or at least I hope they are.

When your machine has been up and running for a bit feal the heatsink. Be carefull becuase if it is running that hot you might get burned!

I would take your HSF off and put some new thermal compound on it and reseat it. And see if that changes your temps.

Also how long did you let the memory testing program run? If possible let it run for more than 12 hours. It usually takes a bit to find the errors.

Does your motherboard monitor voltages? If so get Mother Board Monitor and try and monitor them to make sure your getting good voltages...

I downloaded MotherBoard Monitor and Let it run for a while.
However I am not sure what the voltages should be.

It also tended to reboot the machine quite a lot, but I have not run it since I have moved the memory to the other slot.
