hey guys, new problem here, didnt want to make a new post:

hey guys, i was trying to install a game and play it a few days ago (hellgate london). every time i tried to load the game after the install it would just turn right off and not power back on unless i unplugged it for 5 or so seconds. so then after a few tries, i realized i didnt have direct x installed (stupid me). so i install it and the game loads fine.

so then i download a patch for the game, install it, try to launch it, and pc shuts off again. i unplug it and try again, same thing happens again, so then i try to turn it back on and it wont boot into windows. it gets to the windows loading screen and blue screens and restarts, and keeps looping like this. so ive had enough and wipe my hd and install ubuntu.

everything was going great, until i tried to type a certain command in a terminal. it would start out processing the command, then pc would turn off. i try it again, same thing. then someone tells me to do some command that fixed my problem there, and i was able to use the command i was trying to use in the first place.

then later, i was trying to upload an image to imageshack when my pc shut off again. then it happened once more as i wasn't doing anything except simply browsing the forums at what.cd.

anyone know what my problem is here? im thinking my PSU might be overheating, or my CPU. im not sure, just my guess. i didnt think it was a heat issue at first because it would only happen at certain times, but now it seems like its just doing it randomly. i could be on my pc for hours and it wouldnt shut off, or i could have just turned my pc on and been using it for about 5 minutes and it might shut off.

what do you guys think? heat issue? failing hardware? any help/suggestions appreciated, thanks!

Sounds like your PSU was failing and the game just pushed it over the edge. I'd assume that the shutting down and waiting just allowed the PSU to cool enough to start working again. Then, by continually forcing it to run, it finally crashed your system with some disk corruption thrown in for good measure.

Perhaps checking the PSU fan, a good cleaning (PSU, fans, case, heatsinks, etc.) will cool it down. Then a Windows repair install.

hmm ok well i just decided to format and install ubuntu. i lost my files, but its not that big of a deal. i forgot about my post here, wish i saw it before i formatted :p anyway, after i installed ubuntu, there was a command i was trying to type into the terminal, but every time i did, the same thing would happen, pc would turn off and wouldnt start until i unplugged it for a little bit.

so you think its an overheating psu problem? ill have to go buy a can of air tomorrow, thanks for the tip

Since it does it in 2 different OSs, it is likely a hardware problem. Since it does it randomly, and you've eliminated the ram, my next guess is a thermal problem. Since you say the cpu temp is good, I would look at the vid card and North Bridge chipset.

hmm, i know this is going to sound bad.. my northbridge fan is unplugged. when it was running it was so damn loud, i could hear it at the other end of the house. so i unplugged it to see how things would run, and no problems for about a year. i was going to replace it but my pc seemed to run fine for so long, i figured i didnt need it. the placement of the northbridge fan is awful too, its right behind my video card, which i believe is what causes the extremely loud noise

what do you mean look at vid card and north bridge chipset though? you mean the temps? how can i check those?
