Hi guys, long time lurker here first time poster. I have a system that I built and have been upgrading a little bit at a time and I have been having issues with the computer shutting down randomly and being unable to have a stable system up.

A little back story. Around November of last year I noticed that my computer would randomly shut down, and I could restart it and everything was fine. I shouldn't have ignored this but low and behold I did. Fast forward to January and the shut downs got so bad that I couldn't even have the system up for longer than a few min before it shut down again. When these shut down's occurred I checked the temps and both the CPU and GPU where within standard temps.

Now I swapped out the GPU and did a fresh install of windows 7 and updated all the drivers. Ran League of Legends and it was fine for the first game or two, then bam comp shut down, no graphic errors, just a black screen to reboot.

I ran dxdiag and this is what I found.

Could be motherboard or power supply.. What board do you have?

Going GTX 760 to GTX 570 costs you 40+ watts.. If it shuts down even faster now, I'd say it's a weak power supply.

Motherboard is an ASUS M5A97 R2.0. Computer has been on for about an hour now. And it was shutting down faster with GTX 760. Maybe its an SSD issue? I have an old intel SSD SA2CW120G3 and a newer KINGSTON SV300S37A120G. Currently windows is installed on the intel SSD.

Post hardware specs, reading the details, my suspicion is the same as Burpo.

After doing some reading, it could very well be the VRM and possibly the Northbridge getting too hot. There's a few people with the same problem. One says to place a fan on the VRM and the North Bridge to cure the problem.

"I'm having a heat issue with what i believe is the North Bridge Heat sink (blue heat sink between the CPU and the PCI-E slot)

i am trying to find after market heat sinks for this point as I'm currently resting a normal case fan on top of DVD cases pointing directly at this point as it over heats while playing BF4 BETA, CPU temps and GPU temps are fine"

Computer won't go past Windows loafing screen now, just resets. If i dont use it for a while, 3+ days. I might get an hour use out of it or so. I dont think its north bridge chip unless i fried it already. What do you guys recommend i try to swap in first? New mobo, cpu power supply?

Is there anything in the Windows\Minidump folder?
Sounds like hardware is a distinct possibly.
Have you visually inspected the board for blown capacitors?
When it freezes, is the northbridge heatsink extremely hot to touch?
What are your cpu/gpu temperatures like before it shuts down?

Unable to get past loading screen before it resrts itself. Everything on the board is cool or warm. Nothing is physically hot to touch and as far as I can tell, nothing burned out on mobo. You guys think a new mobo/cpu is in order?

If you put old PSU back in does it operate normally?
If so then you new psu is bad.

Disconnect storage devices and just let it run. Does it power down on its own then?

If so, at least you have a method of testing that doesn't potentially involve trashing the file system.

No storage devices connected and its been on past hour, might my SSD being bad trigger the shutdowns?

It seems improbable. While sitting at a "cannot boot" screen, I doubt that the power usage is that high (though odd things do happen power-usage-wise in the BIOS for example).

I might be inclined to connect a DVD drive and throw in a Linux live CD and see what happens, that should test the system a bit without the need for fixed storage.

Another thing to try is just to leave it on the monitoring page in the BIOS, hopefully your system does the same as most I've seen in that the BIOS can be mildly CPU intensive.
