opteron 165
dfi rs482 infinity
evga 7900 gt co
enermax liberty 500w
2 gigs of g.skill pc4000 hz ram
q-pack case
Previously I had this setup on a different motherboard. T-force 6100-939. I was able to overclock the opteron 165 to 2.4 with ease. I had it run dual prime95 for 10 hours. And i never had this restarting problem. Now with the new motherboard, whenever i overclock it or change anything in the bios, it'll run for like 10 minutes to an hour, and then restart. I disabled automatic restarts, and i dont get any kind of blue screen. It just powers down and restarts. I'm almost possitive its the new motherboard. What could the problem be? It runs fine when optimized defaults are on.

i recently had this exact same thing with an asrock motherboard. it was the memory timings causing it in my case. try backing off on the memory timings some. in my case it turned out to be 1T command rate that was causing it.

Not all mobo were made equal thus oc'ing is not always guaranteed. You will just have to use lower settings eithr in ram or in speed.

I don' think its that the motherboard can't handle being overclocked because before i noticed i had a restarting problem, I tested how high i could get the fsb while running dual prime95 and it got to like 315 without spitting out an error. Also, its restarted before with stock settings, its just seems to restart more often if its overclocked. Any ideas?

Check the vCore and the vDIMM.....some motherboards may undervolt them causing your overclocks unstable...

ya i checked the voltages and the cpu voltage seems a bit low reading 1.31 for 1.35 volts, but i dont get any errors in prime95 before the restart occurs. I mean im not getting any symptoms of an unstable system, other than the random reboots. Theres no bsod theres nothing the the event manager thingy. What should i do?

on the contrary, you ARE getting a symptom of an unstable machine...random reboots...go to the DFI forums at DFI street i think it is called, and see what they say there...I have noticed alot of problems like these with DFI boards lately, to say the least, they are for more experienced builders in my opinion...they seem to be much more picky about settings and brands of ram and ram timings than any other board I have ever used, and I have used alot:) to me they just are not worth the hassle of the problems setting up, once done they seem to be very good, but getting there will drive some people insane:)
