I'm having problems with my computer rebooting on it's own, not when i tell it to. This has been happening when I've used a program called Soulseek. I've heard people say that when they replaced the network card that they did not have this problem anymore. Is it possible that the ethernet card would cause this?

I'm running XP, all updated, and I've run every Norton's 2002 test.

After spending close to 8 years Tshooting hardware related problems as a bench tech in a shop, i've found that the most common causes od spntanious reboots are:
1. Over heating CPU
2. Under powered components, which means un-reliable power supply.

I would first check to see that you are adequatly cooling that processor then I would take a multi meter to every lead coming off your PS.

A collegue of mine stated that his top 2 answers would be first memory(a ram stress test can help determine this) or OS.

If everything there looks good then time to start your standard Tshoot, which is removing parts one at a time to look for the culprit.

Happy hunting.

Thanks for the quick response.

I'm at work now so I'll have to check when i get home. I don't think it should be over heating though, the temps have been okay as I have ArticSilver and a monster fan on there. The power supply...that I will have to test.

Although this only happens when i run soulseek, never any other time.

Wht kind of program is soul seek? is it a game? I have seen, on a few occasions, where after playing a game which is particularly stressful on the vid card, when you go to launch something else video related a reboot occurs...I have yet to track it down to vid driver prob or the software/game itself so where to look or what to try along those lines i dont have much help sorry.

Soulseek is a file sharing program.

www.soulseek.org

It's a really cool program, but since i seem to have a computer that will reboot when i open it, it makes it difficult to use. Since it's file sharing that is why I wondered about my ethernet card. I've tried talking to some people on the board of soulseek and one other person had a similar problem, but then it went away when he went to dial up connection, which made me wonder about the ethernet card.

Sounds like a Windows registry problem to me, something is not right, the computer probably is getting confused and it restarts itself.. i have heard people diagnose stuff like that before, i personally haven't come across that, but i know it can happen...

The only time the computer has this problem is when running this program?

If thats the case then its prolly program crashing the system. By default XP restarts the system when it hits a BSOD, instead of displaying the error.
