Hi. Does anyone know how to convert an mp3 file into a mid or midi file. I used a Sony Forge program to trim mp3s and my instructions were to just rename the files with a .mid at the end. but that still keeps the file as an mp3. Can anyone help?

Why would you want to change an mp3 to a .mid? I dont think, just from the type of sound files they are, that it would convert very well at all...

Ok...i found a few programs that make mp3s into midi files. But this is not what I am looking for. I dont want my mp3s sounding like piano music. can anyone tell me how to just change the tag of the file so that my computer recognizes it as a midi file and not an mp3 file. please help

You can't do that without converting. A typical MP3 file is roughly 5mb in size (depending on the bitrate), while a typical MIDI file is much, much smaller.

Changing the filename extension or editting the tag will do nothing as MP3 and MIDI files are completely different.

Actually a guy converted a 30 second clip of an mp3 (approx 300kb) into a Midi. supposedly just be changing the extention. Since the MP3s im dealing with are roughly 250 kb in size its not a problem, but I know it can be done...just dont know how

To clarify one more thing..when I go to the properties of the mp3 file, regardless if I make the extention .midi. the properties say that it is an .mp3 file. Can I change the extention..thats all i need. I need the computer to not recognize the file as mp3

Wha'cha doing? Making Mp3's into ringtones? That's at least what it sounds like to me, I do it all the time with my LG VX 6000 .. IF that IS what you're doing, just hit start.. run.. type cmd and hit enter.. you'll get what looks like an old DOS prompt... browse to the directory containing the Mp3 via the cd command. ie. cd c:\dir\holding\mp3 and then use the ren command to rename the file.. ie. ren whatever.mp3 whatever.mid

And you'll be done... now you won't be able to play this as a mid, but it will be an mp3 with a mid extension that a lotta cell phones WILL play. ;)
