Computer Problem

I have an Athlon based machine 1700 I think. I recently upgraded to Win2K, and am having nothing but problems. I keep getting errors saying the registry is corrupt. This has happened twice (I have wiped the hard drive and done fresh installs twice). I have run memory checks, and the memory checks out OK. Any ideas what may be causing the registry corruption? This machine is not on a network, and viruses can be ruled out (I have norton with updated definitions). Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks...

Well, viruses can never be ruled out, unless you have no network/internet connection and just installed OS. Even the most current definitions can be outdated. But it could be a hard drive problem, or your cd might be bad. Not syaying that you do, but this one at computer camp, a friend had a corprate copy of WIN98se and all his installs from that particuar CD were bad. Also, this is something that is rarely seen as a cause, but I do suggest to keep all your drive cables away from the internal speaker. I dunno if this is really the case, but I was havinf similar problems installing the OS or apps, and just day to day problems, and then nothing. I couldn't figure it out, and then noticed that my IDE cable was lying ont he internal speaker. Not much of a tip, but worth a shot...

Could the power supply be causing this? It has a Deer 250W power supply. Is this AMD approved? Could this cause the registry corruption? The CD is good, and the machine has not been connected to the Internet (the second install).

Is there any way to check the hard drive? I have formatted it twice with no errors mentioned. Does this make any difference.

Thanks.

I believe the major HD manufacturers have HD test utilities somewhere on their sites.

One easy thing to do is to pull out and reattach the HD ribbon cables, which will clean the contacts.
