Computer problem

i noticed my temps were increasing and realized i had not properly seated my heatsink. so i take it off and after i put some new thermal compound on. my computer will not post or even beep. all the fans come on and power is going through the motherboard. just no beeps and no video gets through the monitor. i changed my vid card but still no video. did i just fry my motherboard or processor? i have an asus a7n8x deluxe, xp2500, 2x512 corsair, 9800 AIW, antec piano black case. help. thanks

if it worked before you turn it off and reseat the heatsink, and you didn't do anything stupid inbetween, your cpus is okay. Just check your heatsink again.. i don't know what else it could be - weird problem.

yes, fan would still turn on if the mobo is messed up.. what did you exactly do after shutdown when it was still working?

I would make sure the CPU is properly in the MB. If the CPU isn't in the MB good, it won't POST. Check to make sure all the pins are correctly in there.

ok. i struggled putting the heatsink back on. screwdriver hit the motherboard pretty hard a couple times. so now i took the heatsink off and just left the cpu in the socket. the computer will turn on for a few seconds then shutdown no beeps. without the cpu in the socket the computer can stay on. i'm thinking i may have fried the motherboard when i hit it with my screwdriver. does that sound right? how can i know if i messed up my cpu?

that'll do it

now lets talk about the ethics of doing an rma. will it be ok to get an rma and how hard is it to get an rma from asus? i'm not a good guy i know

i've heard that asus is hard to rma.. they don't take a lot back or help out when it comes to this stuff.. well that's what i heard - correct me if i'm wrong.. if rma doesn't work out, call them for repair - i'm sure they'll do that.. shouldn't be that hard to redraw the traces

Don't ever turn your CPU on without a heatsink on it. That is a good way to fry your processor as well. Your problem does sound like a MB problem though. The reason it shuts off after a few seconds is because once the CPU reaches a certain temperature BIOS automatically shuts it off.

oh shtt.. i didn't read that part very carefully.. I think you fried your CPU and your motherboard is dead too.. If you turned on your computer without a heatsink, it's pretty much dead for sure in about 1 second.

Your CPU might be fine.....it turns itself off to keep from frying the CPU. Get your new MB, and check to see if your CPU still works, I bet it still works.

" so now i took the heatsink off and just left the cpu in the socket. the computer will turn on for a few seconds then shutdown no beeps."

so,wait, first you jabbed your motherboard with a screwdriver, then you took the heatsink off your CPU and TURN THE COMPUTER ON?

kiss them both goodbye

^^ what he said. May I suggest you look at the photos here towards the bottom for some techiques that will help you avoid this problem in the future. Don't ever power up your system without the heatsink installed (correctly, and with thermal-interface material), because the CPU core is very small and generates a lot of heat for its size. It'll hit overheat in 1 second without the heatsink to help absorb the heat.

Ethics-wise, you know it isn't right to RMA stuff unless it's fairly certain that it's the manufacturer's fault that it doesn't work. That ends up raising the cost for everyone, so do unto others... yeah. 😉

if he sends them a motherboard with damaged tracks and a CPU thats cooked, i doubt they'd honor it anyhow. he'd probably just get screwed out of the shipping.

thanks, that'll help me out later. i really think amd should rethink how to put the heatsink on. cause its a lot easier on an intel board.

5 seconds without heatsink and byebye CPU.

I Learned that the hard way

How much thermal paste did you apply. If you put on too much it acts like an insulator and will make the CPU run hot. Maybe you gobbed on too much.

Clean off the CPU and the Heatsink. Use rubbing alcohol (not beer) and clean them up good. Then apply a very thin layer of thermal paste(paper thin). Try it again. If it fails you probbaly burnt out the CPU. Did you smell anyhting after you did the 5 second oops?? It smell pretty bad when you burn up a CPU.

The PCB on a motherboard is pretty tough if that is all you wacked with the screw driver.

I'll stop now......

That would be my guess.

My cpu is still good. I looked at the motherboard where I whacked it a couple times and it looks like it has a layer of plastic protecting it with no damaged traces. I went and got the xp2500 and ecs board combo, now I have an extra xp2500. Maybe i'll test this asus board again with the heatsink on. and use a socket to put in the heatsink. sucks having to swallow a $100 loss. hehe

Do not turn on your computer without a heatsink, you got lucky that your CPU shut off before it burned up, others have not been as fortunate.
