My PC powers off randomly. No blue screens no restarts just powers off. I am really at my wit's end on what the problem could be. I have changed the graphics card, replaced the PSU but the problem continues. Here is the config.

Core i7 860
Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2
PSU: Corsair 450VX.
Powercolor 5570 Graphics Card
Seagate Hard Drive 500GB
HP DVD-ROM.
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600

Could this be an issue with my case or the motherboard? Any diagnostic checks I can run to see if the CPU or something else is overheating?

Would really appreciate suggestions.

Just checked computer temperatures in BIOS it shows CPU at 89 degrees. The fan seems to be spinning ok. What can I do to lower temp?

That's much too hot...like, dangerously hot for idle. Your HSF probably isn't seated properly.

Time to invest in an aftermarket cooler. 20 or 30 bucks will get you something like a Coolermaster Hyper 212+...I just recently picked one up and my i5 750 oc'ed to 3.4ghz idles at 35 degrees and doesn't get over 55-58 at 100% load.

Thanks guys. I removed the existing thermal paste and replaced it with AS5 and reseated it. Seems to be working fine idling around 46. I am not overclocking at all everything was running on stock settings.

Is there a chance that I might have damaged the CPU? I have had this problem for a couple of months now and I had ignored it until now as the PC wasn't being used regularly.

Unlikely that the CPU is damaged, intel cpu and one little tough cookie.
If you are using the Intel heat-sink they can be a pain to install correctly, it is best to used 3rd party heat-sink with a metal back plate and screws.

Your CPU probably isn't damage, they are designed to shutdown automatically I believe to prevent damage. The hyper 212+ is probably the least expensive/high performance aftermarket cooler and it works great. My E8400 core 2 duo was 40 idle and 60 under load with orig stock heatsink, upgraded to the 212+ and it idles at 35 and 45 under load.

I got the Hyper 212+ on sale at Fry's Electronics for $20 and it's silent but kinda large
