Computer Powers Down on its own

My computer has recently staterd shutting down on its on, once every two days or so. Cant seem to id any specifice software or user actions, happened once while I was surfing and once when my wife was working in a database, buy did that get the heat up in the house 😱.

system:
ABIT KA7
Athalon 700 oced to 900 and something
Geforce 2
Maxtor 40 Gb (2 months old)
just added 256meg ram (up to 512)
Win XP / W98 dual boot

Im guessing its the PS which is 350watt, 3 months old or the MOBO

also with XP It dosnt power down all the way like when I am booted in W98.

Are you overclocking with FSB or multipliers?

If it is FSB then that new RAM you added might not be able to run stable at your FSB speed.

thanks Yomega, Im Oced with both, multiplier and FSB. But would that cause the system to power down or just lockup? I didnt say b4 but I get no system abnormalities prior to the shutdown

Thanks

I think your first step in troubleshooting would be to put the FSB and multiplier back to the recommended settings for a few days. It won't kill you I promise.

Did this start when you added your hard drive/RAM? What are your CPU temperatures at idle/load states? What is your Vcore? In Win 98' it just shuts down right? When your system powers down under XP, does it essentially reboot? Windows 2000 and XP can restart if a system halt occurs. To find out if your system is capable of this, check the registry. This should be found:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CrashControl.

Value: 0 Disable automatic reboot
Value: 1 Enable automatic reboot

If this isn't what's happening, you should try backing your CPU down to default settings or changing your PSU (350watts is enough for your system, but it could be going to PSU heaven...)

edit: Oh yeah, Welcome to Anandtech! 😀

Thanks everyone for the help!

It stared a few days after I installed the RAM.

Ill have to check the voltages and temps when I get home for work 😱

I only use W98 for playing older games which I havent been able to do much of lately so I havent experienced any shut downs in W98 yet.

When It shuts down in XP, it powers down, like I yanked the plug out of the wall or hit the power switch on the back of the chassis. Afterwards I can hit the power switch on the front and it comes right back on and boots up.

this has only happened 3 times in 2 weeks, Id say we run the computer about 5 hours a day during the week and its on all day on the weekends.

My computer does the same thing when i play Unreal Tournament. It does it almost every time i play it in the middle of a game it just reboots. It also did it once when i was surfing the net. Is this a system halt thing?

1ghz AMD Thunderbird
IWill kk266-r
384 mb crucial ram
geforce 2 64 mb
maxtor 40 gb HD
Win2kPro/WinXPPro dual boot

I've only had it do this under XP. It hasn't done it recently but i haven't had time to play UT either. I don't have anything overclocked, everything is running at normal speeds. Is there anything i can change so it wont do this anymore? Thanks.
