Computer Power Supply screwed?

My older P4 2.2ghz has been having a problem where it will shut down at random times. When it shuts down the laser mouse remains on but the computer is not on. Also in this state it will not turn on. You have to flip the power supply switch on and off to get the computer to start.

Does this computer need a new power supply or is it something else?

That sounds like a very likely culprit, you should try pluging in another power supply to test it. It's funny that the mouse stays on, usually when a power suply cuts out you lose total power. The motherboard could be having issues, too (power management, soft-off, etc. . ) but if you plug in a differnt PS and the prob goes away you found the problem.

i had this issue a year or so ago

the problem was a powered usb hub
it was somehow putting juice INTO the usb port in the back of my pc

i would shut down, and my mouse would stay lit, as would the keyboard
then it wouldn't start back up without flipping the switch or unplugging
it'd reboot randomly as well
