I think you can get a top of the line computer for $2000. Spending anything more won't get you more performance. Maybe flashy lights and nice visual effects...

What I would do is spend 2-3 grand on a solid computer, plus a really nice monitor, speakers etc....

Then in 1.5-2 years spend the rest of the money on a computer upgrade. If you have 5 grand to spend, its easily doable to get your moneys worth, but I dont think you should put all of your money into the system, make the experience and productivity better with stuff that will last a long time. For instance a 24" DELL LCD would be a good investment with your kind of budget, heck you could get dual 24" monitors if thats your cup of tea.

Throw in a X@ CPU, 1 or 2 gigs of ram, an NF4 ultra or SLI and later next year you can upgrade the computer again or something.

Have you done your research yet? Tell us what you have been eyeing for components. Also. tell you what you need and EXACTLY what you need to use them for. I'm pretty sure you're not going to run a Amazon.com server, but we do need alot of details if you want to be lazy want us to do recommendations...

My recommendation is for you to talk to a local guru. Usually a computer nerd at the local college to get the right stuff(computer instructor who looks like a nerd) or if one is not available, the local computer store nerd (computer techie) who can rate the goodies you want.
You really don't have to spend $5000 for a good system. You can signup at the local community college to get academic software to cut your computer programs to about 70%+ off.
Next, you can make up a list and check with a local ebayer who really knows how to get great deals on eBay for 30% to 50% less than NewEgg. If you willing to ask questions on AT, you can do the same face to face in your hometown.
The bottom line, you could get a fabulous computer system about $2500/$3000. Your software can range from $1500/$2000.
It really depends on what you capable of, what your computers skills are, and what you want to accomplish.
You don't have to be a rocket scientist, to use a computer, but neither should a computer be made for a rocket scientist, to use it.

My first Dell was a little over $5, 000 back in 1995 and that was a Pentium Pro 200 mhz with 64 meg of ram. LOL. :)

BTW, the monitor still works great!

Since you're new to the computer scene, let me recommend checking out the peoples' rigs who respond to your questions. This should give you a better idea of what they're talking about. It's a better indication of what gamers, nerds and other computer users really have in their inner sanctums. People talk about what's good and the like, but are they talking from experience, or from what is on their wish list. We can recommend anything, but if you have someone who is interested in you, you can get a really good system, that's you. Usually, a computer tutor or teacher that you can befriend would be your best option and also fun in building a custom system. Its too bad, you not at our community college. It would be an exciting challenge.

$5k for the box and everything else, or $5k for the box?

What do you mean by game dev? Like Visual Studio 6 w/ DirectX SDK or Bloodshed w/ OpenGL or 3D art dev w/ Discreet and Maya?

Preliminary recommendations:

PC Power and Cooling Turbo-Cool 510 Express / SLI
Asus A8N32-SLI
Opteron 175
2x1GB OCZ EB DDR500
RAID5 with 3+ Fujitsu MAU3073NP
