Computer Parts for Christmas!!!

Right now I currently have a Sony Vaio(PCV-RX450). This computer is a AMD Athlon 1.0GHz, Asus motherboard, and 128MB of PC133 RAM. I have already upgraded the RAM to 512MB of PC133 RAM. Next I wish to upgrade the motherboard and the processor. Since I will be upgrading these I will also need some more RAM. Can you please tell me are these three componets all compatible and do they all work well together? Also I would like to know how hard will it be to get my current mobo out and insert the new one? I have looked on the Sony website, but I cannot find anything related to my computer so I was wondering how sure can I be that the mobo will fit into my computer? This mobo listed is ATX form factor. Also since the mobo has dual channel DDR will I need two sticks of 256 to get the full effect?

NEW PARTS:

CRUCIAL MICRON 256MB 32x64 PC 2700 DDR RAM

Biostar Motherboard for AMD Athlon/AthlonXP/Duron processors Model#M7NCD PRO Retail.

AMD ATHLON XP 2500+ "Barton" 333 FSB PROCESSOR CPU- RETAIL

Thank you for your advice

Time to scrap the VAIO altogether. I'll give you a Christmas list of stuff to grab for your new system and you can get rid of that proprietary POS.

1. ABIT NF-7 Rev 2.0
2. 2500+ Barton
3. X-Dreamer Case w/400 W (any case will do but these are great deals with 400W PSU's)
4. 512 PC3200 DDR (up to you what you want, but I use a dual chan kit of OCZ, and it's amazing)
5. Video Card is your call again, but probably a 9600 Pro would be a great midrange.

And there you are, your Xmas list for this year completed. 🙂

Alright thanx alot man

BTW: Do you know about how much these parts will cost?
BTWW: My parents are planning on buying the parts so thats why I wanted to kepp my current case and get as much as I can for around $300.

Pricewatch.com is your friend. Also, check out the Hot Deals forum, and other deals sites, for info about what's on sale in any given week. I usually notify my friends whenever I see Lite-On CDRW's for around $20 after rebates. Another good example is, Office Max occasionaly offers 256 MB sticks of Kingston PC2100 DDR RAM for $9.99, after rebates, and I often see large hard drives for great prices.

These may not be the items you need, but it'll give you some idea of the kind of money you can save if you have the time to do your homework. 🙂

With a 300 $ budget this won't be easy.

I'd get a ecs + amd 1800+ combo for 59.99 at fry's when they have that deal going( can prolly oc a lil bit).. seems to come back every other week. sometimes it will be 2000+ and same board for 69.99 .
run it at 166 fsb..
and get 512 of pc2700 or pc3200 ram.. thats like 80$

video card... 100$ might get you a non pro 9600

Then you might still need a case because the vaio might not work with all these parts. 40$ cheap one with psu

So.. you are looking at 40 + 80+60+100= 280.. + some tax..

Scrap all your hard drive/ floppy / cd-rom/dvd from that vaio.

Also check the fs/ft forum to cheaper prices on used stuff.

for the three parts i have listed it will cost me about $240 with free shipping.

the only thing i have left is to know whether or not the mobo will fit?

Volskid, don't you have a tape measure?? Just find the motherboard you're going to buy at newegg.com-- they give measurements for all the motherboards they sell. Although, I can assure you that ANY mini-ATX board, like the ECS K7S5A Pro that Fry's always includes with their socket A processors, will fit into any case without any problem.

But, I have to agree with lxie, you'd be much better off just buying a new case for this reason: your power supply probably isn't going to support the faster processor. Computer manufacturers are known for saving $.50 per unit, by buying a power supply that just BARELY has the power to handle what they put into the case. If your VAIO has less than 300 watts, just buy a new case, man.

shuttle AK35N for 48 after rebate
athlon 1800 and OC the sh!t out of it.
2*256 buffalo 3200/3700

From the look of the model I saw on the web, it seem to be a microATX. You need to open up the case and see how the motherboard look like in terms of size. If it look more like this, it a standard ATX. On the other hand, if it looks more like this instead, it's a MicroATX.

You also need to check the input/output panel configuration of the board. If the original motherboard has I/O setting just like the one you see on either one of the two boards, you have a standard ATX I/O panel.

For those suggesting him to get rid of the whole thing, shame on you. 🙂 This planet does not need any more waste. And, utilizing what you have as much as you can with the minimum investment is the beauty of upgrading. Of course, it's is more challenging upgrading the brand name systems, but that's also the fun of upgrading.

If the case is indeed a MicroATX, I recommend this Biostar nforce2 MicroATX board. I have been very happy with it in my second system.

This board together with DDR Ram and Athlon XP of your choice will make a pretty good upgraded Vaio.

If you still don't know about your board & case, take some pictures (of the board, board's I/O connection, inside of the case, and back of the case) and email to me. I should be able to give you a better suggestion.

alrigth i looked around in my case and i have come to the conclusion that it is a micro atx form factor. i think i am going to purchase a atx tower so that i can use the mobo that is atx form factor. what cases do yall recommend that are under about $50 and come with good enough power supplies?

here are two pics i took:
they are large so give some loading time plz

According to this website, your computer has SiS 730S video which must be integrated to the motherboard.

Hence, you will need to buy either a videocard or a motherboard with integrated video.

Here, you need to make a decision. If you like playing games, you should cut down the $$$, on motherboard, CPU, and memory, and invest on a decent videocard. If you enjoy video decoding or the other CPU and memory intensive things, but not games, you can go with the integrated video, and spend $$$ on CPU, memory, and maybe a hard drive.

Also, you might want to check if your motherboard is this. SIS730S chipset supports 266Mhz bus, so there is some chance that you can pop in faster Athlon XP and get it to run on it.

You check your motherbaord and case, then think about what you want to use the computer for, then figure out how you can best spend the $300.

i already have a videocard in my current computer. i love playing games that is my main reason for uprading my current machine.

so i think im going to stick with the three parts i listed and possibly the case i listed if there are no other cases that some poeple can suggest.

edit: also my cureent mobo can only handle a 1.4ghz and i want to go higher than that

I also find some pictures of Vaio w/ SIS730S chipset motherboard. Is yours like this and that?

The board has a proprietary I/O panel design, but it looks like you can replace with the any I/O panel.

You will be using your case for a lot longer than the motherboard, CPU, and other componets whcih it holds inside.

You can look for a case you like from a place like Newegg.. There are a lot of cases in your price range. Antec cases come with a pretty good power supply, and you can not go any one of them. However, they tend to be more expensive.

Enlight and InWin have been making solid cases for a long time. I hear Ever Case cases are inexpensive but pretty good. There are many others which are good. Just choose the one you like in your price range. I personally do not like those with windows and all the other crap.

I wish if you could go with using the Vaio case as I think it will be more interesting project, but good luck.

i would go with the vaio case but i dotn like the fact that it is a micro atx :frown:. so what i am proably going to do is buy a new case, mobo, cpu, and ram. then i am going to take all my other stuff like hard-drive and sound card, and videocard out of the vaio and put in the new one. my firend said he would buy the vaio so i am going to rebuild it with a new video card, hard-drive, etc😀.
