Computer overheated and now monitor is damaged - was this a coincidence?

I built my first PC last year and sadly the case fan stopped spinning as fast as it used to and eventually got worse and worse. The screen glitched out and after shutting the PC down I noticed the PSU was VERY hot. I hooked a laptop up to the monitor I was using so I could order a new case fan, and noticed a lot of green flashing pixels where the color black should be, and other minor imperfections. I figured that since the laptop was old, the video card was on it's way out as I've heard those greenish pixels are a tell tale sign of this.

I bought a new fan and installed it in my PC, but now I still notice the greenish tint (on both the laptop and the PC), and since I've hooked a different monitor up to the PC and laptop, the screen is fine.

Does anyone think that the overheat could have damaged the monitor?

In general no, but I suppose that anything is possible such as an overheated video card failure that puts extreme voltage on the video line out.

Thank you for the reply. Worst part about the whole situation is that the PSU fan stopped working as well - effectively 1 or 2 months passed warranty, so I still can't use my computer.

I've googled this issue with no luck, and I've tried doing auto adjust on the monitor. Very upsetting, but I suppose it could have been worse if the PC was hooked up to my HDTV or something.

Did you try a different input? ie vga instead of DVI? If your vga input is fried you might still be able to use DVI without the same problem.

Could be a video cable problem. Trying swapping the video cable between the two monitors.

Sorry to bump this old thread, and thanks for the suggestions. VGA is the only cable I have at the moment, and I actually did try switching the VGA cables with no luck.

The good news is that everything is working fine now. I plugged the cable in as securely as I could and the problem was still happening.

I was dealing with the annoying green lines until one night I fell asleep with a completely white screen up on my PC (new tab in my browser or something) completely by accident and when I woke up the green lines were gone (not joking). I am using the monitor right now and I haven't seen the green lines since...

I figured I would share this since it was a really odd solution to the problem... I have heard of programs to fix stuck pixels by displaying certain colors ect. so I assume this sort of had the same effect. All I know is I'm not questioning it, I'm just glad it's working.
