Hey all,

Sometime ago, one of my computers stopped working, after months of flawless work. Before it stopped working some weird things happened.First, there were purple lines on the screen after booting it when the computer was not warm. Ok, after a few boots, it disappeared. Later, when i was using it, some smoke started to come off the computer, but i could not figure where it was coming from. I checked the fan, and every component, everything was Ok. A couple weeks later, the computer suddently stopped working when my father was booting it and he says he saw a message telling the bios or something like that was corrupted. He was not sure though. Anyway, after that, i could not make the computer work - until today, but i'll explain it later. I tested the memory - Ok. Changed video cards - Ok. Removed every component..and the computer was still not working. Then, today , i decided to test the processor on my other mobo, and it worked, and my other processor, a 1.2ghz tbird, worked on the 'defective' computer. I reassembled both computers, then, after working for a while, the computer hung up - when rebooting i get those long beeps and no image. I got it to work once again for a while when i changed the fan thinggie from one header to another ( on the mobo ) but it hung again. Do you guys have any clue of what i might try next ? Or what can be the defective component ? I though of heat issues, because the computer hung after a while , but i have a very powerfull cooler...one of those noisy thermaltake models.... The termic paste on the processor already has dried up, but i don't have any....can this be the issue ? Please help, 'cus my work is all on that computer and i need it kinda soon....

Anyway, here's my config :
Abit KR7 mobo
Athlon XP 1700+
Ati Radeon
512mb DDR memory ( i can't remember the brand )

It takes a while for the computer to start beeping. It's kinda long beeps and they keep beeping until i turn off the PC. I searched google for beep codes for award bioses, and it said those beeps could be memory/video or anything else...it seems award bioses have only two beeps...

Any clues?

A bad power supply maybe? Do you have another? A bad agp slot? Do you have a pci card you could try? Look on the motherboard at all the capacitors, do any of them have puffed up tops, instead of being flat? If they do, that is a sign the board could be failing.

I tried changing power supplies and it worked...that's how i managed to make the pc boot. But it only lasted for a while as i said on the post. I though about a bad AGP slot, but its weird 'cus the system worked for a little while...And i don't have any PCI boards to test with it. I'll take a look at the capacitors now...

Update..No puffed capacitor tops...

I am starting to think it's some heat issue...I tried powering up the computer, but this time it didn't even beep. So i took a look, messed with the fan conector and the video card..and it worked for the time i went to the bios and changed the cpu speed. Btw, i think it's a coincidence but it's the 2nd time the computer hung just after changing the cpu speed ont he bios...Anyway, now the computer won't power up again.
