Computer not keeping time after shutdown

My dad's computer loses the time setting while being powered off. I'm thinking it's the MB battery. Is that the likely problem? What kind of battery goes on there? Does it depend on the MB model?
 
Do you also turn off the PSU switch ?

No it doesn't you can get that battery at radio shack ,,,, take with you what was on your board and get that one. Batteries aren't model specific..
 
Yes, it is the CMOS battery. You can find those at pretty much any office supply store, or Wal-Mart.
