Computer no longer powers on

Its most likely a dead motherboard because the onboard LED doesnt light up when theres power. I tried the PSU and checked the power button both are fine. Any ideas why the mobo would just crap out? Person I am fixing it for said she use to be able to smack the PC and it would come on. But it quit doing that.

Any ideas or does the mobo just need to be replaced? Also will a normal micro ATX mobo fit in a HP?

uh I just dropped the mobo in the case while messing with something on it. Only dropped it a couple inches(just enough to jar it) and now its working?

Has to be a short somewhere but where? BTW the LED only lights up when the mobo is turned on.

How old is the mobo? I've worked on some machines that wouldn't power up and it turned out the the CMOS battery was dead. As soon as I replaced it, the thing fired right up

see thats what I was thinking last night. I took the battery out and tried to turn it on and it wouldn't. So I popped it back it and it would boot up. I then took the battery back out and put a 3mm LED on it to see how bright it was and it was fairly bright. I then looked on the back on the mobo to see if maybe the solder might have broke loose from the -/+ battery leads. Looked good. I don't understand.

I don't really see how it could be anything else but the battery because why does jarring the PC sometimes allow it to come on?

BTW the PC is at least 3 years old. Its one of those Wal-Mart Celeron specials. The celeron CPU is built kinda like a P4 but bigger.

Try cleaning the battery (wipe it with a tissue) and use a qtip with some alcohol on the mobo contacts. Could be some gunk on there.

The only other thing I can think of would be to check the ATX power connector. You said the onboard LED didn't light up initially, so something is preventing power from reaching the board.

naw I thought the LED would stay lit constantly but it only lights up when the PC is powered on. So do you think maybe the CMOS battery was maybe loose or dirty?
