I'm working on a P4 system today, and me and my bro smelled something funky. Kind of like Ozone. We dug around for it all over the place and then my brother manages to place his hand on the cable of the mouse and it's burning hot! We shut down the system and turn the mouse over and... Oh Snap!! The little ah heck has a hole burnt through it with a single exposed diode.. Does anyone know what could have happened?

Oh Snap!
Hot enough to burn the PCB!
mm mm mm mm mm! Toasty...
Well that little ah heck got hot..

EDIT: I will say that the mouse is just a simple PS/2 IBM brand mouse. The kind you'd get with a Windows 98 computer.

EDIT 2: Edited title for you wierdos expecting fried rodent :p

Probably just shorted out.

Anyway while were on mouse stories...

Few years ago while going through my CCNA class we had to build a small network of about 12 computers or so and all them were up and running fine... except for just 1. It wouldn't even turn on, so we started to diagnose it, made sure everything snugly plugged in, swapping components, and nothing was happening, still wasn't turning on. Finally we just said just try one of the working towers, unplugged a the working tower and plugged everything back in for the working tower and now the working tower wasn't turning on. So were all like WTF? We put the working tower back were it was, grabbed the old one and just started random things, first swapping monitors, nothing, next keyboard, nothing, different power outlet, nothing, finally unplugged the mouse and viola it turns on, and sure enough the second we plugged it back in it turned off the computer. We couldn't believe it, a mouse the would keep any computer it was plugged into from turning on, amazing. It was the first time i've seen that happen(and it remains the only time).

I couldn't believe they actually still MADE ball mice... until my new dual core workstation showed up last year... packed with a shiny new ball mouse.

I use them for old systems that I'm working on. I got an old Pentium system that I'm working on right now. Such computers don't work well with some of the USB mice so I just keep a few old mice from here and there. I'm not going to waste money in buying archaic mice just for test projects. That mouse that obviously shorted was from an IBM computer from back in 1998.

Was I the only one hoping for pictures of an actual living mouse that had somehow melted?

Not so much hoping as expecting, but yes.

I would if they still made any that weren't total crap. I do much better at FPS games with a ball mouse, though I have adapted to an optical mouse.

Looks like something in the IC shorted out, drawing a lot of current from the PS2 port. Shouldn't a fuse on the motherboard have been fried first? What's the current rating of a PS2 port?

you do know they make non-ball ps2 mice right?

A lot of people will say bleach. Of course they're smelling the ozone produced oxidants. Ozone is an extremely powerful oxidizer with an ORP nearly twice that of chlorine. A lot of the OPO's are chlorinated compounds. If one is unfortunate enough to be near a working ozone generator and gets a good whiff it does not smell like bleach however the reaction in the respiratory system will produce OPO's that smell of bleach.

Since a corona discharge produces O3 the ozone smell is often associated with electrical activity. Producers of lots of corona discharge (plate caps, leyden jars, etc.) will often produce several mg of ozone per minute which can raise the levels in a poorly ventilated space to dangerous levels. Even short exposure will cause headaches and nausea which is unpleasant enough as it is.

Yep, it really does.. Gave a close whiff to see if that was indeed where the smell was coming from and i've had a headache all evening now.

I electrocuted myself on a PSU this morning..

Electricity is not my friend today :(

Dam bro that was funny...you touched the heatsink on that shorted out PSU and you were jerkin around like you were doing the robot..

All joking aside you scared the flying shit out of me when that thing hit you. THAT's WHY YA TOUCH IT WITH THE MULTIMETER. He had that shorted PSU sitting on the computer case. That PSU hit him with some juice so out of curiosity i tested the case...125.37 volts running through that steel chassis. ALWAYS wear rubber gloves when dealign with equipment that you suspect has shorted. A shorted mouse and a shorted PSU, what a lucky day today...I fear for my home now :(
